Okay, I really have to get this off my chest since people are posting here what a terrible captain Smith was and that he was just rushing. First of all, the Titanic was never supposed to be the fastest ship to cross the Atlantic. That was the Mauratania and the Titanic couldn't keep up with her and also was not meant to. The Titanic was built to offer the passengers (of the first class) a luxurious trip, not the fastest one. Also, it wasn't even at its highest speed at the time of the collision. So Captain Smith didn't rush across the Atlantic just to obtain the Blue Riband. Secondly, there were two routes, one more in the North for summer and another one more southern for winter. Smith took the latter one and since he received various ice-warnings (even though not all of them actually reached him), he changed the course to an even more southern one in order to prevent getting trapped in an ice field. So basically, he tried everything he could to prevent an accident from happening and can't be blamed for being reckless. The only thing he perhaps could have done is slow down a bit just to be even more careful, but various captains defended him that in his situation they would have acted exactly the same. He was a very experienced captain and passengers felt safe with him, also after the Titanic he wanted to retire, which I find really sad. He really shouldn't be blamed for the accident like that. May he and all the others from the Titanic rest in peace. (And I am sorry for that long comment.)
