I still think this is the greatest sword fight ever filmed.

Fun fact: the stuntman with the sword was absolutely distraught that his big moment was going to be just getting shot but understood that Ford was ill and wouldn’t be able to do the scene as planned. By way of an apology Ford doubled the stuntman’s pay out of his own pocket.

Read an interview that they were going to have this elaborate fight scene with whip vs sword, but Ford was sick and they finally figured a gun was easy and funny.

Orginally there was going to be a longer fight but Harrison Ford was not feeling very well and asked Steven Speilberg if he could just shoot the idiot. Steven agreed. :)

This was improvised. There was supposed to be this long dueling scene. But Ford wasn’t feeling too well, so he took out his gun and killed the actor. They almost ceased production, but they absolutely loved this improv, that they kept it in there and cleared Ford of all manslaughter charges.
