Liberal MP Greg Fergus was elected the House of Commons Speaker on Oct. 3 in a historic mid-session vote. Fergus, 54, was first elected in the riding of Hull-Aylmer in 2015. As is tradition, the new Speaker was “dragged” to the chair in the House of Commons by the prime minister and Opposition leader today after votes were counted.

Former National Director of the Liberal Party of Canada, Greg Fergus won his Hull—Aylmer seat in 2015 after allegations that his campaign spread false rumours that NDP incumbent Nycole Turmel was terminally ill. In February 2023, only eight months previous to his election as Speaker of the House, Fergus was found to have violated the Conflict of Interest Act.

This is an historical parliamentarian tradition originating in Britain and passed down to our parliament as members of the British Empire.
The winner is escorted to the speaker's chair by the prime minister and leader of the Official Opposition. The newly elected speaker, by tradition, feigns reluctance as they are "dragged" to the chair in a practice dating from the days when British speakers risked execution if the news they reported to the king was displeasing. This has always taken place with a new speaker of the house pretending to be dragged by both leaders regarding past speakers of the house.
