Why is it so important to select a proper rootstock?

In this video, we discuss the importance of rootstocks in fruit tree production and why we use these particular rootstocks. While 'Turpentine' is the most common rootstock we use, some other size-controlling rootstocks such as 'Sabre' or 'Piva' are important when dealing with cultivars that are more prone to be larger trees that would not normally fit our orchard scheme. While we do not have any scientific research backing our rootstock selections, our anecdotal evidence has led us to believe that certain cultivars are more size-controlling than others. We hope this video helps highlight the importance of properly selecting rootstocks.

Thank you for the videos Dr. Campbell. One suggestion... turning the phone camera sideways makes it for a much better video and it fits better on YouTube.

Thanks for the great content! Im curious about how you harvest the seeds from a lot of mangoes? Do you cut the flesh off each one or is there a more efficient way?

I remember back in the 80’s and 90’s, Number 11 was a commonly used root stock. Is it a good root stock?

Thank you, great informative video as always. Keep them coming. Question, I have a Orange Sherbet Mango, 40" tall, that just finished a growth flush and I want to tip it. Is it too late to do it now or should I wait until next year? I'm in Venice FL

Do you have any advice for the backyard grower who just uses whatever seeds of mangos they just ate as rootstock? I haven’t been labeling my root stock, some Valencia pride, some nam doc Mai, Kents, and tons of unknown south FL mangos. Should I try to keep track of my root stocks? I just put a pina colada on one of these unknown rootstocks and it looks good.

I'm cutting down a few trees this September. They are healthy but either poor producers or fruit that I'm not fond of. Is it safe to say they would be excellent root stock? I'm debating grafting to the trunk vs planting a new grafted cultivar.

I grafted a Julie on a regular mango seedling last year. It looks pretty good. My question is will that seedling which I know is from a vigorous mango tree cause the Julie which is a dwarf mango tree to become a vigorous mango tree?
