It's no secret that the nations around the world are looking into improving the firepower of their main battle tanks. Germans want to move from their 120mm gun to the new 130mm gun, and have already ideas on how to upgun their Leopard 2s, and have even made such upgrades on a Challenger tank. The French have also proposed the 140mm gun. And Russians have had ideas to upgun their Armata tank with a 152mm gun basically from the tanks introduction. But what about other Russian tanks? The tanks that are still armed with the 125mm guns?
Well, there have been attempts to upgun the tanks with the 152mm gun, and those attempts have shown that it is very much possible. In this video, we will take a look at the Object 292, a tank prototype that could shape the future.

Well well well, isn't this a coincidence this video got recommended again, considering Obj 292 with the LP-83 152mm cannon is being added to War Thunder.

Makes sense. West Germany did trialed a 140mm Rheinmetall on a Leopard 2 MBT in the late "80s. It was supposed to be an upgrade after A4 version. But, the fall of the Berlin wall ended that prospect. At least, according to the info that are available to me.

I can definitely see the 152mm being used on the Bob Semple.

How well did the stabiliser hold up? Did they design a new one or did the existing one have to stabilise that monster of a gun? How effective was it?

one thing you left out is the excessive wear the 152mm guns experienced compared to standard 125mm guns. the barrel life of the 152mm gun was less than half that of the Standard 2A46M-1 gun which likely would have been the achillies heal of the project because the USSR was all about saving money where it could and the bean counters would look at that as an obvious problem.

In that case bring out the 183mm cannon from the FV4005

I can see 130mm or 140mm guns, but any bigger than that and it seems more like portable artillery at that point. It might just be more practical to fit a vehicle with anti-tank rockets and a smaller gun for attacking concrete bunkers and such.

Speaking of this armored monstrosity Gaijin added the obj 292 to WT.

My big question about the 152mm tank gun is … can the gun be fired with crew hatches open or … do the hatches have to be closed, due to increased muzzle blast?

it is coming to War Thunder. We'll see how well it fares.

Then by 2045, Russians are upgunning thier tank with a 203mm L55 Naval cannon!
Germany is upgrading its Leopard 8A5 to the 173mm cannon
US thinks its L44 is still sufficient and simply puts a longer rod on its shells.
Britain out sources production of its Challenger 5 to the Germans to upgrade it
French Leclerc model 37 gets a new double barrel 130mm cannon.

I dunno about going much bigger than 120/125mm. Especially with an autoloader. Larger rounds means fewer for stowage. Larger rounds means larger autoloaders. Larger rounds means lower sustained rates of fire.

Meanwhile, *_Electrothermal-chemical guns are a thing._* And the United States has played around with them before with the CATTB/M1 "Thumper" and the M256-derived XM291 ETC cannon (which, was actually a 120mm ETC ignition/propelled gun with about 17MJ of energy (about on par with conventional 140mm cannons) - as a prototype - and which could scale up to 140mm). There's also longer barrels, propellant types, and case lengths (which still take up more room, but no where near larger caliber rounds). All this is something that is possibly cheaper or easier to retrofit while giving similar performance or better.

“Well, we all know the 152MM is an old WW2 design from the KV-2. A failed meme tank. Clearly this is garbage! What?! Idc if the only linkage between the KV-2 and this gun is the caliber?! It’s WW2 tech!” -Lazerpig, probably.
