4 TIPS for Writing a Literature Review's Intro, Body & Conclusion

1. Introduction (focus, purpose)
Restate your research question
Emphasize the timeliness of the topic (e.g. “many studies have focused on the problem x)
Highlight a gap in the literature (e.g. “while there has been much research on X, few on Y)

2. Body (put into subsections, subheadings)
4 tips:
(1) Summarize (give an overview of the main points) & synthesize (combine sources to make an overall point, show the similarities and differences)
(2) Analyze & interpret (add your own interpretation and discuss the significance of findings as a whole, e.g. “Throughout the literature (analyze), there is consistent evidence that… (interpret))
(3) Critically evaluate (identify the strengths and weaknesses)
(4) Structured paragraphs (use transitions and topic sentences to draw connections, comparisons and contrasts)

3. Conclusion (sum up the main takeaway of your literature review)
- Show how your research addresses gaps and contributes new knowledge (Research paper)
- Summarize major findings and implications, make suggestions for future research (SAP)
