Why Is Everyone Terrified Of This Horror Game?

The release of Silent Hills P.T. a while ago urged many developers to unleash their creativity in the horror gaming field, and specifically on the psychological side. Many games like Visage and Madison have succeeded in making us relive the experience of P.T. with new vibes, but these types of experiences are usually complex and relatively long. However, there was one experience that simply felt different and unique for so many reasons. This game is From the Darkness, and even though it takes place in a small apartment, the atmosphere is enough to give you what you're looking for when it comes to horror.

Telling the player they can hold shift to run is probably one of scariest things to pop up.

This game is the embodiment of running up the stairs after turning the lights off in the basement

This game is another proof that relying in jumpscares won't make your game scary(althought using jumpscares in a limited quantity and frequency can still be effective).

A builing in ruin? Brother, that's an average living building in Russia. If anything it's in a rather good condition. Sure the elevator isn't working and ghosts are rather loud but hey, working pipeline, relatively clean, electricity, hell you won't feel alone and depressed all the time since there is that funky spectre. Feels like a rather nice place to live

That’s it- Grandpa is no longer allowed to have roommates from Craigslist

> Perfectly clean stairway of regular Russian apartment building <

“THE PLACE LOOKS DEVASTATED”

Dude… this is the cleanest Soviet era apartment building ever. Paint job looks fresh which means local authorities used government funds right. And people who live there are not complete pigs.
Usually those hallways have broken railing, chipped paint, swear words graffiti and uncle Vasya laying drunk on the floor.

What this game does so expertly well, is subvert expectations built up by other horror games to generate tension. It constantly implies you must take action to survive in this game. Like having to close the doors in FNAF to survive animatronic attacks. However, everything is out of your control, as the game is actually scripted.

A dark room, potential danger -> You’re unable to explore the room. You can only watch and listen to the monster as they observe you.
You’re constantly told to “RUN AWAY” -> You’re unable to actually run anywhere.
Going under the bed implies you must hide from the monster -> The game won’t progress until you come out from hiding.
Even when the monster was out in the open, looking around the corner, all you can do is watch it return to the dark room.
What’s confusing, is that even though you could be killed at any point in the game, nothing ever decides to attack you. You are entirely at the mercy of something that you do not understand.

''you'll discover a shocking discovery.''
maybe the scariest game was the proof-reading we didn't do

Mystery solved: there was vodka and some snacks on the table. Our ghost is simply grandfather's drinking buddy.

Fuck this game man. From The Darkness is one of those games that made me phobic of being alone in the home or even during the WC while washing my hands i won't dare look in the mirror.

The background atmosphere IS music. There's a genre called dark ambient which is long droney sounds and atmosphere often with sound recordings to add depth and a sense of place. The label Cryo Chamber is dedicated to dark ambient artists. They have a YT channel with loads of artist videos on and a live 24/7 video with a dystopian monorail ride and a non stop playlist of dark ambient tracks.

I feel like the ultimate fear most of this is capturing on is: Home. It doesn't even need to be your own but your apartment, your flat, your home, your buddy's home, your grandma's home. They're safe spaces. When you are surprised by odd things, odd sounds, bad lights, possible strangers...that's an ultimate nightmare. Who CARES why the strange man is in my house or my grandfather's house or even what my grandfather did. HE. SHOULD. NOT. BE. THERE. and i think that is why, when we bring the horror closer and closer to home it's so terrifying even if the story or reasoning isn't explained or perfect...we all fear something in our own space that should not be there.

I was never able to finish it. This is the first horror game that literally made me afraid of walking in the dark as if it's in real life.

Stephen King wrote about jumpscares in Danse Macabre. He spoke of approaching a door that you know something horrible is on the other side. And how the dread of observing the closed door is so much stronger than the quick shock once it’s opened. Whatever is there will cause fear and relief, because no matter what it is it’s now exposed to be dealt with. While the door is closed, it’s still an unknown, making it much scarier

2 scariest things that can happen in a horror game:

1. “Press Shift to run”
2. Random autosave

How do we tell this guy that this is the nicest Soviet era building we’ve ever seen? There isn’t a single chip to that paint, or drunk guy asleep in the hallways.
