I work as an engineer in solar cell manufacturing equipments. So proud to see solar cells are saving the earth. 7 out 10 top solar cells manufacturers are Chinese. All manufacturing machines used in the whole process from producing ingot to solar panel assembly are now designed and made in China.

Over the last 40 years, China has increased its forest cover from just 12% to 23% now. When one takes into consideration that of China’s national frontier stretches some 9.6 square million kilometres, about the size of the United States. In other words, China has planted just over 1 million square kilometres of forest. That is the size of Egypt!

China is also the only country in world which has successfully reversed the seemingly unstoppable desertification, by turning its desserts into forest, farm lands, and wetlands. The area of desertified land in the country is dropping by an annual average of more than 2, 400 square kilometres, or 3 times the size of Singapore, compared to what used to be an annual average expansion of over 10, 000 square kilometres at the end of the last century.

By 2014, China had completed and commissioned its mid-line stretch of the South-North Water Diversion Project.
This 1, 300 kilometres dedicated, largely gravitational-flow, water supply channel diverts water from the Danjiangkou Reservoir in the upper reaches of the Han River, passing through mountains; crossing rivers; and finally reaching and transferring 9.5 billion cu meters of water annually to Beijing and Tianjin.

To put that into perspective, the annual per capita water consumption of the Asian cities: Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul, and Hong Kong are at 84, 52, 104, and 80 cu meters per annum respectively; with the average consumption of 80 cu meters per annum. In other words, the amount of water transfer annually is adequate to sustain an urban population of over 110 million people with clean and potable water.

When you have limited arable land or want more, the European colonists would take sparsely occupied land by force ( e.f. America, Australia ...) the Chinese by building islandS from reefs and semi-submersed rocks in SCS or converting desert into arable land.

Why can China do this? 1. The Chinese government is a one-party dictatorship and there is no election pressure, so the central government can formulate long-term policies. 2. On Chinese land, collective and state-owned, private individuals can have the right to use, but no ownership, so the government’s ability to plan land Effective implementation, 3. Hardworking Chinese people

Due to mismanagement by mechanized agriculture during the 1920s, the Americans created the Midwestern "Dustbowl" and overgrazing by sheep, cattle, and goats stripped much of the American West of vegetation. However, during the 1930s the US Works Progress Administration (WPA) reclaimed most of both regions. The USA is now the world's largest exporter of grains, vegetables and pork. China should be credited for repairing the damage caused by deforestation and overgrazing a few decades ago. We all can learn from each other's mistakes and solutions. China has done well with desert reclamation, India with rainwater harvesting, and Israel and Holland with highly technical agriculture.
One thing that is clear, we have exceeded Earth's carrying capacity and that climate change floods, droughts, and a deteriorating biosphere threaten civilization. The current military-industrial complex development model is NOT sustainable. Lets try cooperation. We have less than a decade to regenerate the Earth ecosystem or face extinction. old geologist
