How China Turned the Desert into Green Forests

China is rebuilding the Great Wall of China. However, now they build not with stones, mortar, sand and rubble, designed to stop the enemy hordes. Nowadays they build with trees. Just like the wall erected many years ago, the world's largest man-made forest should stop the enemy that China has been fighting for many years and which is no less dangerous than the problem of overpopulation. This enemy is the desert that occupies most of eastern China and continues to grow non-stop.

The world may say alot of things about China but we gotta admit, when they put their mind to something, they definitely put in the work to achieve it.

Recession is often the result of external factors, and it appears that the United States is losing its grip as a federal reserve currency.
With a decreasing ability to control inflation and a reduction in stock and oil trading, it seems that a new multilateral world order is on the horizon.

I was in Xinjiang 3 years ago as a tourist from California and I saw this with my own eyes. We traveled hundreds of miles both on buses and on high-speed trains. On both sides of the road/track as far as the eyes can see were newly planted trees, both in the sandy/rocky desert and on arid hilly terrains. Trees were even planted on cliffs so steep, you wonder why they bothered (or who would be so brave). And it went on endlessly. It was amazing. I live in California and drives through the barren Mojave Desert all the time and there is nothing like that here.

Calling this impressive would be an understatement. This is astounding and marvelous! Living in Phoenix, Arizona and now Namibia, the desert is something I am familiar with. Watching people work together to halt desertification is moving and inspiring.

This is generations of devotion and hard work. When I was a kid, I learned in school about the 三北防护林 or The Three Northern-Protective Forests. Now my daughter is a kid in school, and the project is still going. I hope I could live to see the finish of it. Though many Chinese are atheists, many of us worship mother nature. Let's protect our mother nature and the green and blue planet we call home.

My friend owns a trading company in northwest part of China. He told me that if you would donate the money to support the planting plan or watering system, the gov will give them good package of tax reduce. smart policy.

There is so much anti Chinese propaganda in the west that we often don’t hear about all the good things they are doing. I love projects like this I hope the one in Africa is even more successful, for all our sakes.

I laugh to myself when I read the comments from the commentators. Not the object they comment on, but the satire of western countries. Times have changed. We no longer hear what people say, but see what people have done. One thing is for sure, the Chinese workers living in the desert never read our comments. They don't seek praise. Thumb up to them 👍👍👍

Technically, this whole large scale tree planting project is divided into three phases. First phase is for preventing further desertification in the northern border, second phase is to use forests to gradually alter the dry climate of northern areas, and only in the third phase will they finally start to plant multiple species of tree. Right now China is only at the first phase, and in desert climate majority of the tree species can barely take roots, let alone surviving long enough to grow to a proper size. There are very few tree species that are suitable for this job, and that's why the Chinese government decided to not put "multi-species" as its priority but rather the area coverage.

This is so fascinating...
Sadly, in the West (where I live) you virtually never hear or see anything about China's enormous desert greening projects.
Wasn't aware of the extent of China's efforts, and want to learn more about it...

I had not heard of this amazing work being done in China, and I do wonder why. Here in Texas, USA, much of our state is quite dry and in need of trees also. We have relied on the media for years to keep us informed, but I am learning so much more on YouTube documentaries that it makes me think that the news networks in our country are somewhat controlled by the wrong people. I am hoping that the spread of information on the Internet will help with the better understanding of world events.

The most impressive thing about the Chinese is their passion, irrespective of what they're doing. When they are putting in their efforts, it's like you cannot distract them from their goals.
Loads of respect, from India.

My wife and I planted a pine tree at the Great Wall two years ago.

I live in the most heavily forested state in the lower 48...the benefits of a large healthy forest are incredible. Just the recreational and sport activities alone are impressive but many people here make their living by harvesting and managing the forest for future generations.

Don't underestimate Chinese people. They are trying to change things positively for the best of the World.
I like the way they are thinking and doing things for all of us.
The whole world can learn about their technology. Very soon they will be able to feed the whole World and nobody will suffer of hungry.
