James Baldwin was a unique, inspiring figure in American history. In his novels, poems, plays and essays, he asked the most profound and challenging questions about the human condition, and issues such as masculinity, race, class and sexuality, in a time of great social change and upheaval.

Born in Harlem in 1924, he rose to fame as a writer after his exile in France, where he was involved in Paris''s bohemian left bank scene during the late 40s through to the end of the 50s.

Known for his commanding oratory, he came to prominence in his homeland during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. where his commanding oratory and deeply moral prose proved to be a fearsome weapon in the battle against racism.
Baldwin authored a host of works including Notes on A Native Son, Go Tell It To A Mountain, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Giovanni's Room.

He was the recipient of numerous awards including the French Legion D'Honneur, and was described by renowned critic Harold Bloom as "among the most considerable moral essayists in the United States"
