This is exactly what i’ve been feeling.. listening to it excessively can get very overwhelming sometimes. Not only is it distracting, but i also feel like it increases my anxiety & deppression. Great video, im about to start a 1 month cleanse now!

I tried this for a few days and it's amazing how much songs randomly pops into my head, feeling the compelling need to re-listen it.

I searched for this because i felt like i have music addiction. I just couldn't be in silence, made me anxious. And also my sleep was disturbed by echoes in my head.

Great video! The interesting fact I have here is that in Islam there is a majority of scholars who either entirely prohibit music or tell us to have boundaries, the reason for that is because music, as you said, it can really stick to your mind. So the type of music you listen to might also be worth noting, what type of lyrics are you consuming, because even though we take it as for granted, anything and everything we give space to in our minds, we allow it to affect us. I'm a person who finds herself deeply affected by what I'm watching, reading or listening to, and about a year ago, I tried to change the type I limit myself to (I don't tolerate negative connotations, swear words etc) and/or stop listening and yes, I have found that I get a sense of my own opinions on the world, free of influence, moreover, I'm able to concentrate more with no annoying stuff repeating the same word 300 times per minute.
I would suggest you search Islam's view on music because you'll found some books exactly dealing with this issue, ( I don't remember any rn) I think you'll be very surprised at the validity of this concept and how long ago it was discussed.
Good luck!

As a musician obviously I won't stop listening to music, however during my monthly 3 day fast I also do a dopamine detox and that includes stop listening to music. It clears the mind and makes room for new ideas.

I had this insight today and after a bit of research I've found your video. If I start my day with music my mind is all over the place. On the other hand, without music I recall information faster and I get to truly organize my thoughts properly.

This is one of the best videos on YouTube.

Thank you and keep up the good work! :)

I like your perspective. I wonder what happens if someone were to stop listening to music completely.

PS: Good video!

This is such an interesting topic. Although music may seem harmless, in some way too much of it does cloud our mind. The other day I thought about this too, it seemed as if i’m blocking my mind from thinking.

Its not just the lyrics, music as music, the beats and instrumental of it changes your mood, and "stimulants" that change the way you think are automatically bad for you mental health, speaking from experience here, i listen to music all the time and its screwing the way I think, im thinking of quiting all together.

You make a well established point about silence. But, I believe listening to happy music or relaxing music can be good for you. It's when you listen to depressing music or angry music (too much) it can have an adverse effect on your mind. Anyway, good video.

I agree with this! I can't concentrate if I have music playing. However, music can help me to put me in a good mood, but as soon as I'm in that good mood, I need to stop the music and go do. I think that if you don't 'act' while you're feeling good, the music can also drown you down. It's like watching a motivational video, you get hyped, but if you don't go out and do anything than in the end you're gonna get tired of watching those videos. Btw, keep up the good work!

As a music writer and creator I think this is still useful, I hope I can come up with more original thoughts as to lessening my music consumption, thanks for the content man keep it up! 🔥

Big fan of Ryan Holiday! You may also enjoy Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport. Great book that goes into a similar topic/within this same space. We're too interconnected with the world through social media, always have our headphones in, etc. that we need to have some isolation for our thoughts just to roam. That is a skill in itself that actually has a ton of benefits. Great stuff, Nathaniel. Keep up the hustle and keep the videos coming!

Your listening to music in a very basic way. Pick the music apart count the time. Isolate each instrument and notice the harmony. Sounds like you need to stop listening to pop music. For me it lights my brain up and inspires creativity and inspiration. Brings out moods and emotions. There are so many genres for all the different types of mental stimulation your looking for. Just expand your love of music don’t stop listening that’s not a world I want to live in.

Great video ! Myself being an active musician I started detoxing from listening music since few weeks (walking, background music while working, workout, in the car etc.) . I love the silence. When do I do music as a musician ? Only when I practice, rehearsal time and perform with bands. Somehow the music feels deeper/meaningful when you intentionally listen to it. So, also not listen to songs/albums to accompany activities, but really make time to intentionally listen to songs (as you would do for a movie/reading). Somehow you get more into the music then, like you understand more what the music/composer wants to 'tell', which then is a big value to the musician also ;-) .
