I watch a lot of videos on this topic because I travel alone so much, and this one is really great! I’m so glad you mentioned the fact that people are more likely to be targeted if they have logos. The wealthiest people I know do not wear obvious logos and definitely wear things with understated elegance, and that’s in Europe and the US and Canada. They do not want people to know they have money, and they’re never targeted. Brilliant advice, Alice! Thank you.

I went to Paris for the first time last year, and loved it. The people were so kind and friendly to me. I was on my own and felt very safe. I am going back in a couple months. Every time I go to Europe, I really do my best to blend in and be respectful.

Fantastic advice. Last time I was in Paris a young French woman approached me to ask for directions in the Latin Qtr. I was flattered she thought I was French! I was in jeans, simple top and trench coat. Excellent video Alice, thanks very much.

Even at age 14, my parents had me dressing in pant suits, nice shoes and a camel wool coat while I was in Paris and Versailles during winter. Nowadays, my backpack (with zipper locks) is used strictly as a carry-on while flying to my destination. After that, it stays in the hotel room until it's time to fly home. While wandering the city, a tiny cross-body purse can hold essentials without screaming "tourist!" I love the non-flashy, chic and elegant style of French women.

Absolument! Right after I watched this I went to the pharmacy. THREE people were wearing Crocs and two girls were wearing pajama bottoms with giant logo college sweatshirts. It was hell trying not to laugh!

I think you should push your lawmakers to make your country safer instead of talking how to dress so we are not robbed. Tourist should be able to dress how they please and not "camouflage " .Tourism brings big money to Europe .

I am American and I never wear a backpack or bag on my back, I am too paranoid to do this. I always wear a shoulder bag and I have the bag where I can see it at all times generally with my hand over it lol.

sorry I'm from nyc and everyone uses backpacks and totes for School, work, to carry stuff that doesn't fit in a cross body like an umbrella. no one is wearing New balance or converse because they are cheap looking. Also no one is wearing white sneakers because they will get dirty and who is wearing that when it's raining all the time in Pari? lol that's silly. I used a backpack, tote and crossbody depending what I was doing in Paris. I wore black water proof nike sneakers to get around and slipped on nicer shoes when I entered restaurants. Sometimes you have to choose comfort over pain.

I wish more people had the mindset to try to blend in when they visit a new place. Personally I think of it as part of the experience.
