Hey Mav, never commented before but I figured I'd give you a simple tip from my time in the Army. If it's cold out and you're ever having a hard time starting that thing, have someone crank the engine while you block off the exhaust pipe to give it enough back pressure to fire up. Keep on truckin!

I was actually a mechanic in the military and worked on those all the time. HMMV’s ares awesome if you get them running right. I would strongly recommend taking those batteries out and putting Hawkers I think that’s what they were called. Autozone Carry’s them near military bases. Nice job arcing the battery!! Never wear metal jewelry when working on the electrical it will ground off on those pieces you’re wearing. Look up the Army TM’s for that model HUMMV and you’ll find a whole maintenance section on it!! Keep up the good work!!

Should bought a FLA (Field Light Ambulance) They have artic heaters and AC built in to treat patients. A little more headroom, with interior storage above driver and passenger. They also have drop down steps in the rear for ease of entering and exiting

D with the O around it means overdrive. So if it’s a 5 speed it will go to 5th. If you only put it in D it will only go up to 4. It’s for towing / fuel Economy sakes. If it’s always trying to shift into 5 then back to 4 id leave it in D without the circle around it, but if going long distance use D with the O. Cheers mav

So the reason it’s super loud is because the engine cover is missing from the driver’s compartment. Try your best to find the same batteries that you took out because those you put in won’t last long on that vehicle. You can also find some doors at a military surplus and once you do that the heating system is pretty decent. You really don’t need to mess with the high and low transfer unless you plan on doing some actual 4 wheeling. The key though is to find those batteries because if everything is wired correctly you can power just about anything. Enjoy your new toy and by the way there is a serious run flat device in each tire and trust me when I tell you to take it to a tire shop if you ever get a flat because that’s a lot of work changing one.

@mav I drove an M1026 hardback version of this in the Army 1994-1998! Awesome vehicles!!! Sounds like you have an exhaust leak at the manifold. An engine cover makes it much quieter inside. Also, doors are nice. I recommend the hard doors that came on the 1025 or 1026 instead of the soft doors that this would have had. Good luck!

This is exactly where I would’ve taken the channel if I was him. He’s literally reinvesting into the channel for our entertainment and his. How fucking sick, Mav you’re a legend. Thanks for the inspiration always. Cheers from Michigan 🤟🏻

FYI, I went to a humvee dealership back in 2019 down in Paducah, KY and there is a guy by the name of Brandon that runs it.... All surplus military humvees. I was looking for a helmet top unit. Anyways, they rag the living TAR out of the batteries and starters to get em going after they've been sitting for who knows how long.... It's not uncommon to crank it for an entire minute straight without even stopping once. You won't hurt the starter, trust me on that!!! Those massive batteries you removed are called 6TL military ordinance batteries... There is a reason they are MUCH larger than the small ones you put in there. The small ones WILL work but they aren't meant to be ragged on when starting in the cold like you did!!

They also make a special cable to jump start from humvee to humvee and the port for it should be below the pass seat on the forward wall!

Also you want to purge the diesel filter. There is a small drain valve under the hood where you can open it up to drain the water out!

Enjoy!

I'll let you know right now "Military Grade" does not always mean it's good lol Great video bro!

That's actually a communications truck. The M997 ambulance varient is different. Theres a diesel furnace in the 997 which would be useful.

Hey Mav, I’m currently in the military and I drive these everyday. If you need any tips and tricks on them or just general questioned let me know. Be glad to help!

The horn only works with the service drive lights turned on as I’m sure you figured out. The other side of that switch is for blackout drive with night vision. Tactical so the horn won’t work on that side or with all “off”. Those don’t start well if they’ve been sitting in the cold weather. If you get the interior engine cover and doors you’ll be much warmer. Seal off the rear compartment also! Defrost vents are great for heating MRE food with heaters provided. 24 volt system will definitely weld tools😁 Those are naturally noisy. Top speed around 65 ish. Don’t try fording at that depth, gas cap is the weak link unless it has an awesome seal, if you get water in there you won’t be going far!!

That's a Marine Corps HMMWV. You can tell by the deep water fording kit. Worked on those things for 8 years as a mechanic in the Corps. You should have a big plastic intake horn on top of the engine. If it still has it you can ford water with it. You might also want to see if the run flats are still in the tires. The 6.5 is actually a pretty easy motor to work on. Oh and both D's on your gear selector... The circled one is for overdrive.

I drove these for 8 years and they are lots of fun off road and in the snow! Having said that, there is no way that I would own one in the civilian world. Watching this video brought back memories, including the no start! Enjoy the experience!

Hey Mav, you should buy one of the smaller trailers like the m1101 to pull behind it! It could provide so much storage for a build!
