This is one of my most favorite lenses.... especially at the 1:2 macro setting!  Stunningly sharp images!  The best bang for the buck in the photographic world!  Hands down!

The one in the video is for Canon. But Sigma has the version for Nikon. It's a DX lens which means it fits on the D3000, D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100, D5200, D7000.. And it supports AS-F, which means the auto-focus motor in the lens is also supported by DX cameras. I just ordered one myself for my D5100 camera.

It's 2022 and it's still one of the best beginner 70 300

Thanks very much Compaq. To answer your question, this lens doesn't have an image stabilizer. To get a lens with one of those will cost you several hundred pounds more. With this lens, you should be fine taking photos at 1/125 and possibly 1/60. I hope this helps! Don't forget you can always up your ISO level to increase the shutter speed - however that does increase grain in the photos.

Great review, thanks! I ordered this lens just recently because it was really affordable and well-regarded on dpreview. Seeing your positive review assures me while I'm waiting for it to arrive.

Hi Jens, well spotted, yes I do live in Southampton! Have you been into photography long?Which university are you studying at? The sigma 70-300mm is a pretty decent choice if you're looking for a cheap zoom lens, versatile as well with the macro option.

You can get a Sigma 70-300mm which has image stabilisation, not all of them have it though. Check out for the letters 'OS' when purchasing one (optical stabilisation). Yes it will fit a Canon 550D

Great reviews mate!
I am split between the tamron or sigma 70-300. what would you recommend?

Hi well I think the Sigma 70-300mm would essentially be replicating those two lenses and integrating them into one lens really. I love the macro on this lens, it produces sharp images. For photos of planes etc, you might notice a fall-off in sharpness when the focal length gets close to 300mm. Good choice with the 70-200mm F4L. It also might be worth getting a 2x extender for it bumping it up-to 400mm

@ansorhoorenbeek No problem! The 18-135mm isn't a macro lens either, and I believe the closest focusing distance is about 0.4m away. So in order to do macro photography, you should look for lenses which have the word 'macro' (or 'micro' if you've got a Nikon) associated with them, or look into using a macro converter ontop of an existing lens.

i have this lense, its good for the price you pay for it. its also built pretty well considering it fell from a fair distance and is still in working order.

It's not going to be as quick as a Canon USM lens, but isn't too bad, it slows down more noticeably in macro mode.

Excellent job... thanks for your time and efforts!  I like the Sigma 70-300; but what would you recommend with Image Stabilization in this Zoom range?

Great review. Will it work in my Nikon D3200? Also be able to see in viewfinder or LCD screen, Thanks.

@slrlens Thanks. So the Sigma is more sturdy? I'm only 16 and am on a budget, and the Tamron is about 20 quid cheaper. But this year I'm going on a trek to Everest base camp! (I live in India at the moment) so maybe for protection it will be worth getting the Sigma.
Thanks for such a quick reply!
