WW2 Veteran Rear Gunner relives mission in VR

Kinda hurts to see.
This man hasn't seen this sort of thing play out in over 7 Decades. And to relive that, for even the shortest of moments, that must overwhelm someone with unimaginable emotions

Geoff was my mother's cousin. She told me, that as a lad, he was very good at sports and had a competitive and positive attitude. Some years ago, my uncle Ken was visiting the UK from Canada and we had a small family get together/lunch in a garden centre cafe near Gourock, in the west coast of Scotland. What struck me about Geoff was what a well-balanced perspective he had on life. He epitomised the collective spirit and values of his generation, pull together and get on with it.



He told me that one of the crews in his squadron had left their rear-gunner asleep in his position as a joke when they had landed. When he woke up it was pitch black and he thought he had blacked out and was crashing. So he rotated the gun housing and bailed out by falling backwards only to hit his head on the runway a few feet beneath him.



Geoff was a member of the RAF Association Cumbernauld Branch 1355 and occasionally gave talks to school children of what his war was like.


It was an honour to meet Geoff and to hear his understated insights into his time as a rear gunner.

They never showed him playing but for like a few seconds. Just for a news anchor screwed up these days with them never focusing on the actual story but just trying to get a news anchor for some money and that's it.

Making VR simulations of historic battles? Great idea!
Having the men who actually fought in those battles relive them through VR? Actually... probably not such a great idea...

Did it twice in one day at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum....in between went looked at their Lanc to get a better appreciation of the aircraft...in August going up in the CWHM Mitchell and will likely do the VR again...first rate
