old minecraft is WEIRD

these days, minecraft is a pretty polished game (well, java at least), but it wasn't always this way. i decided to go back and revisit some of minecraft's most nostalgic bugs and features all the way from pre-alpha to the early release versions of the game

I remember breaking boats. I still worry going near the coast.

Can't believe they used to think sleeping was overpowwred when they later added an incredinly annoying mob to try and convince you to sleep at least once in a while.

that first one isn't weird. that's how fire should work. wildfires are serious, kids

The Chainmail crafting recipe was broken for the longest time because it took fire source blocks to craft the chain armor which doesn't make any sense but it adds that old minecraft is weird

nightmares is how the phantom should have worked IMO. Would make them easier to farm on purpose, and would stop hardcore players/speedrunners from just placing a bed on the ground outside each time.

That nightmare stuff unlocked a memory for me. I was wondering why I always even bother placing a house before a bed.
Well, now I know why lol

I share these details with my gaming buddies when I ask how a new mechanic works.
Turns into "we had to go 10 miles uphill both ways, back in my day" type of story time with people the same age as you

I remember so many of these, and for some reason the fence-under-farmland glich was like such a big one for me, glad to see youve posted again!

I can't believe this single video explained all of the Minecraft weirdness I've ever experienced. Nightmares were an actual feature and not just random? The scary stone noise was just the delay from me walking down stairs and not some hidden mob crawling in the walls? Kid me would be invincible with this knowledge!

Saw this thumbnail in my feed and thought “do not cite the ancient texts to me, young one - I was there when they were written”

I remember back before Minecraft had item names. Nobody knew if the grey thing creepers dropped was gunpowder or sulphur. No one knew if sugar cane was called "sugar cane" or "reeds"

Man, Minecraft is so fun no matter which version you play. The way it evolves over time, so depending on the vibes and experience you're looking for, you can play just about any version... I had a 1.8 server not too long back with a friend, and have a more modern one going on currently as well. It's so modular, in a way, and I think that's what keeps it alive even now.

I miss the days I was scared because the night was actually darker then black! So always digging in and waiting the night. After maybe a few weeks I learned to build up and build a massive wooden planks base.

There's something very nostalgic about old Minecraft that I miss. It brings me back to being a child, at the start of Year 7 (6th grade for Americans), getting up really early on a cold Saturday morning to play Minecraft Beta 1.8 for the first time, wrapped up in a blanket with the cat on my desk, listening to the pipes in the house come alive as the central heating kicked in, clanking and water rushing.

I thought walking on farm land still broke your crops in the modern versions until my brother told me it doesn’t lol

1:00 This is how I burned my first base down, back in 2011. I got sick of all the floating leaf blocks after harvesting a lot of wood (mind you, leaves didn't decay in this early build, you had to break them down by hand) so I started a fire for cleanup. Soon enough the fire reached my base (which I stupidly built OUT OF WOOD) and it was over. I sighed and deleted the world.

I remember the 'nightmares' feature - thats how phenomenal minecraft is. I got it aged 11 in Beta 1.5_01 and i still remember my very first night, not having enough wood in time to build a roof and being awoken from bed by a spider crawling over the roof into my house, and making me scream
