Drive My Car: It'll Be Okay

In this video essay, I discuss the the themes of the Oscar-nominated Drive My Car and the effects they can have.

I do not own the films from which I show clips in this video. All clips are used to demonstrate points in the video, which is a review/critique/analysis and does not present the film in its entirety. The clips are edited to short portions of the films and most feature narration on top of them -- they are used to make points about the film. The analysis is for the purpose of commentary and criticism about the films, which makes it Fair Use by both YouTube and Federal Copyright Law standards.

Wow, I didn't notice Misaki's removed scar at the end, such an important detail that gives it so much more meaning. I think there were other subtle details as well, like Yusuke probably giving her the car, as another sign of him moving on.
She also moved to Korea, because Hiroshima was not her intended destination (she only stayed in Hiroshima because her car broke down and didn't have any money to repair it). It's likely that her decision to go to Korea was also influenced during her dinner with the Korean couple, as she felt they were happy and fulfilled, so she thought that she could find it in Korea as well.
Even the dog that she has looks strangely similar to that couple's. Did they give her the dog as well (as she took a liking to it during their meal)?
All in all, such a deep and meaningful movie.

This analysis has changed my view on the world around me. It’s confirmed the feelings I’ve felt for a very long time we’re what made me human. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on a beautiful film.

I'm dealing with 'moving on from grief and guilt. I think what the Vanyha represents in the film is what my dreams persistently represent in my real life. I lost something many years ago. What I lost, I don't really miss in and of itself. But it was painful. I just don't think I've confronted the grief from that ordeal. I can't go back in time, nor do I need to. I did what was right then, and I stand by that now.
But I struggle with it still. I was hurt. And I'm working to admit that to myself. I'm struggling to overcome that. I'm struggling to move on. And I built up existential walls, in the same way the lockdown from the pandemic forced some set of walls at the time. I know I've been struggling to break those down since. I feel like my life is stuck where it was pre-pandemic, and I can't go back to it and explore and move on post-pandemic.
I'm struggling, but I guess that's okay. And I'll be okay. I must experience more of life and explore more of everything; the only way to march forward and be able to face myself squarely and confront my inner grief and pain.

I fell asleep multiple times during this movie, that's not a bad thing though. The car scenes are just so calming. The white noise and the bumps just makes me feel so calm and its nice.

Beautifully spoken. You have discerning taste as Drive My Car and The Worst Person In The World are fantastic films. This might seem melodramatic but Japanese films can express life, love and loss in the most beautiful, compassionate and poetic way. This movie's run time flew by and was masterfully edited, directed, acted. One for the ages and will stand the test of time.

In the ending scene Misaki is in Korea. The red Saab (now) has Korean plates. I took it to mean that Yuske was next in residency in Korea. The movie started with him going away on a trip to Russia. Interesting how the multilingual production of Uncle Vanya could lead to a much broader audience across Asia. maybe he just gave Misaki the car.

Murakami has been my favorite writer since the mid 2000s. This was such an amazingly well-done movie and I worried going into it that the movie was just using Haruki Murakami's name and writing to boost its recognition (it's happened before with big writers) but the pacing and delivery and intimacy was so spot-on for a Murakami novel it blew me away. Such a good movie, but definitely give yourself a part of a day to see it, its long and a lot of it lingers. It took me a while to process.

I'm in tears rn as I think about this touching film and your wonderful insights that really comforted and enlightened me to the true beauty of this film and why it affected me so deeply. I am going through a nightmare situation and this reminded me that there is still beauty to be found even after unthinkable tragedy. I needed to hear and feel your video and I thank you so much for uploading. I usually watch 3 vids of a channel to see if I should subscribe but this moved me and made me realize things about this story I didn't notice before, like Misaki having removed her scar. Didn't even notice that and it adds so much meaning to this already brilliant movie. I'm definitely subscribed.

If you like car, Saab 900 is really fitting for the story, it was the safest car of that era, also is really reliable, it is why he choose that car. And if you ever driven a Saab, you'll fell in love, or hate it, no in-between. I love it, they are smooth, powerful, and safe, also a big understatement, it doesn't show status like a Mercedes or other prestigious brand, even though Saab is really expensive car.

This is beautiful. I’m genuinely surprised your channel hasn’t yet blown up, but YouTube put this on my home page for some reason and i’m happy it did.
