Just a little fyi: the author (Haruki Murakami) has been nominated for the Nobel prize in literature.

I really felt mixed about it throughout but the ending is so strong (last scene on the stage) it made sitting through the 3 hours worth it. Also it's actually very cinematic I think because the words are carried by these great actors and especially the actress who does sign language (idk if she is deaf in real life). 4/5

Just finished the film and had a deep emotional catharsis towards the end. I only have West Side Story left before I’ve caught up with all the Best Picture noms and unless that film blows me away beyond all recognition, Drive My Car is the best of the ten.

I went to see “Drive my car” not knowing much. I really enjoy it. It is a slow burn 3 hour film, but as you said the spoken words have enough heft to carry on. By the way, you post the best review without spoiling the film. Good job!
I think if you grew up in an Asian culture, you will appreciate more subdued acting and more reliance of spoken words. Love the parallel between plays shown in the move and the actors interpretation. Love the way that psychological layers of each main character slowly come down during the length of movie. Kind like Bergman, contrived into been Asian as far as not overtly showing emotions until final crescendo. And at the end message is quite simple as traditionally Asian movies do. Beautiful work!

of course Hamaguchi was gonna knock this one out of the park Asako I & II was practically a Murakami story in spirit.

The best parts of the movie were the long shots of the classic near pristine Saab 900 turbo.

Amazing film. Introspective and melancholy in tone...and urban/rural Japan as a backdrop brings good memories for me.

I didnt expect to like a 3 hour movie so much. It didnt really feel like 3 hours for me and the storytelling of it just felt right for what's in store in the ending. I really like thought provoking films and this is it! Drive my car definitely blew me away for this year together with CODA.

You should check out another Hamaguchi's film this year, WHEEL OF FORTUNE AND FANTASY, it won silver bear at berlinale this year and it was profoundly brilliant movie as well imo

I think you should have mentioned the author's name aka Haruki Murakami since he is a very popular author and many people do not know there is another adaptation to one of his short films. Also, great review as always, it does make me very excited to check this movie out.

The ending was oddly remeniscent of the ending of Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino. The son/daughter characters both end up with the car (although for different reasons!)

This film made such a strong impression on me that every time I see Hidetoshi Nishijima or Masaki Okada in TV commercials here in Japan, I am like, "Oh, Kafuku!" or "Hey, Takatsuki, the bad boy!" Thanks for the great review.

as a filipino, i was pleasantly surprised that filipino was included as one of the languages for the uncle vanya play. it’s not like hamaguchi had no other choices from southeast asia as there’s bahasa, malaysian, vietnamese etc. but the fact that it was filipino in particular is very interesting

It is a Stoic Manchester by the Sea through the lens of Inside the Actor's Studio. I just finished less that an hour ago and I'm still thinking about it. Lots to unpack.

Finally saw this. It's really sticking with me unlike other movies this year. Might be my favorite after Pig

It was a very special movie. It was like reading the book and watching the movie at the same time. Made in a very special way. Calm and gentle but at the same time the characters were displaying strong emotions. However it's the individual who is watching this that this movie will depend on wether they will like it or not I think. If you like to analyse people, then this movie will bring you many thoughts. If you need actions and thriller going on, then this movie will maybe bore you a little.

Masaki Okada is in this movie, which is interesting since he’s mostly in jdramas and mainstream films. He seems like he’s been trying to transition into more serious work and he is a much better actor than a lot of his peers in the jdrama scene. He’s also the most beautiful man alive.

I like this movie.... Character comes beautifully with their words to give some clue to help in better ending.
