"A 20th century reinterpretation, a poetic and spiritual synthesis that borrowed from the past to create something new and resonant for the future": this is the best summary of modern Wicca I have ever read. It used to bother me a bit that Wicca is a modern construct, because it is something that always resonated with me, and it disappointed me that it wasn't older, but what you say in your video makes me understand it better and accept it as it is, without reservations. Well done and keep up the good work!

I really appreciate the time you take to uproot the ahistorical mythmaking so common to neopagan communities, while affirming the value these symbols and practices can still hold. There is little wrong with devoting oneself to contemporary interpretations of myth, but there is *much* wrong with projecting those interpretations back in time and claiming to hold ancient knowledge which simply is not there. Thank you!

Fascinating stuff! It’s always fun to see Crowley trying to install misogyny into his metaphysics. The definition of “crone” as barren and jealous is such a classic Freudian gender-role idea, right up there with penis envy. Maiden, mother, and crone is a really cool model, but one wonders if it’s truly wise to define divine womanhood or femininity by framing it all in reference to reproduction. Certainly, it’s one way to frame it and very magically coherent, but it is also reductive. One wonders why there is no triplicate god of the masculine, representing the sun in winter, summer, and the spring and fall. Maiden, mother, and crone reflected as youth, father, and elder. No doubt one could track down many entities from across cultures to mush together as Crowley did. I wonder if Shinto has something to say about this actually, considering their sun is feminine and their moon is masculine. I do think the modern model IS a gorgeous piece of magical poetry, and no less real or powerful for its modernity, but I do wonder how honestly vital the gendering of it is, and if the underlying triplicate structure itself is what makes it so resonant. But then, what do I know! 🌒

Great video thanks Dr Puca. Side note, I've always hated the use of the word crone in reference to the idea of the triple goddess, as if a woman's value lies only in their ability to reproduce. I tend to use the term wise woman myself.
I know you're using the term in it's historical perspective, it's just a pet peeve of mine.🌒🌕🌘

I love that people are talking more openly about this, and putting the evolution of neopaganism and Wicca into context. 💚

It would be helpful if in your bibliography you indicated the original date of publishing, either instead of or beside the date of the edition you used, so that we can see a clear progression:

1903 Harrison, Prolegomena to the Study of Greek Religion
1929 Crowley, Moonchild
1948 Graves, The White Goddess

As a pagan myself, I thank you for this. Once again, lovely analysis. Spirituality evolves with time just as it is supposed to. Unlike religions that refuse to change, our understanding of the spirituality of the cosmos is malleable and adjusts to fit what we know.

In love your videos! I also really appreciated the review of the points you made in this video at the end of the video. I know with the wealth of info you pack into videos my memory would benefit from a similar brief summary at the end of them. Thank you so much for this wonderful channel. ❤️

The Morrigan was a shape changer. I recall tales of her as a mother and crone... The maiden form is assumed, as she bore offspring from the Dagda.but never actually said. It is said in one tale that she was not originally of the tribe of tuatha de danu, but was present in the sacred groves and rivers before the invasion involving the lugh, the dagda, nuada of the silver hand.
