Allergy Testing: What to Expect | Phelps Health

My first visit to an allergy doctor was yesterday and they want to do the full test in two weeks (on August 19th). I promise to come back and let any future viewers know how it went, if it was painful, etc.

EDIT: As promised, I have returned! First and foremost I HIGHLY suggest you do what I did and bring headphones to listen to music and load up a book or fic to read on your phone. It will keep you distracted and help with anxiety during the whole thing. Now, there are two parts to the test I did. The first part involves putting on a backless gown (you can keep your pants lol) and laying face down on a medical bed. They then marked out a grid and pricked the skin for 24 different allergens. This wasn't really painful at all, more like a light scratch. Uncomfortable but not painful. I then had to lay there for 15 minutes to see if my skin would react. Afterward they measured any reactions and made notes in the chart.

Then, unfortunately, came the second part of the test, the part with the upper arm you see in the video. The arm is more sensitive and more likely to react so anything that didn't react on the back they try there. That part was painful (I have fibromyalgia, which means my body translates physical sensations at pain, so it was worse for me than it would be for your average person) since they are taking a needle coated with the allergen and injecting it under the skin for each one they wanted to double check and the arm has way more nerve endings than your back. If you've ever had blood drawn or an iv put in with a butterfly needle it feels exactly like that. It definitely hurt and I hate that they had to do it so many times (8 for me) but it was over quickly. Then it was another 15 minute wait for a reaction and then measuring and writing down the reactions.

If you are allergic to any of these allergen samples then that spot is going to itch like a mofo the entire 15 minutes and you are not allowed to touch it. You just have to endure the maddening itch as you slowly slide mentally into the abyss. Just focus on that music and book to keep you distracted. After the 15 minutes is up on either test phase they will clean off the allergens and grid marks and then apply a generous layer antihistamine cream to stop the itch. All in all it was unpleasant but not unbearable and it only took a half hour and I never had to look at any actual needles or syringes since the pokey bits were just attached to white plastic handles and not syringes plus I was looking away the whole time. Not me watching this before my doc asked me to do a test on this and I was definitely not looking forward to these as procedures. I’m definitely going crazy after seeing these, idk how am I supposed to get this done😭😭

Im trying to start my 2025 right and am doing a full health check and my dr was like ok so based off your symptoms you need to IMMEDIATELY do a full panel and blood test for allergies… i was dumbfounded like uh ok. I am going for it today plus a few other tests and hopefully by Thursday i will see the dr again (its Tuesday today) and we will have a more concrete plan toward my health!

I’m going for my Allergy Test today. I temporarily take medicine while waiting for this appointment. I stopped taking my medicine for 72 hours, and the itchiness and pain bothered me for three days. I can’t sleep properly. I do acupuncture and dry needling for my TMJ. Hopefully, my pain tolerance or the poke part will be less painful/bearable when I do the test today.🙏🏼

I might want to do this because the last few times I had grapes my stomach hurt really badly and made gurgling noises and I had diarrhea. It was the worst pain. I was also sweating.

Not to be rude but what if someone is allergic to dogs or has asthma to pet fur there is serve dog or Therapy dog or emotional support dog I’m getting this test and I’m worried about that because I have allergies I don’t know if it’s to dogs and the school didn’t answer me I don’t think it’s fair to not communicate

How long does the whole process take I haven’t heard from my doctor and I set my appointment for 1 and my kids get out of school at 3

I want an allergy test but can I be tested for what I want to ive been constantly sneezing and blowing my nose for 2 years I dont know what or if im allergic to anything im taking allergy tablets but it dont help

Didn’t hurt too bad at appointment. Got the same test as video, after is another story….

At the appointment after about 5 mins my arm was bubble city aka everything lit up like the 4th of July and the area where the “grasses” were located- felt like my arm was on fire and turned into massive hives. So maybe seemed bad, that was a walk in the park compared to after 😂

The next day after 2 rounds of high dose Claritin and Rupall. My arm had a giant hive where all the injections went in, swelled out and looked like I had a deformed arm with a baseball embedded, my joints in my arm hurt and felt stiff af (what I think arthritis feels like)and the massive hive/mountain was hot and painful as all H-E- double hockey 🏒.

Now I’m on prednisone, the full 60mg for a week fml. It’s still itches 3 days later. As least not as bad and swelling is chilling out!

Hopefully my experience isn’t common.
