Today I’m going to share a simple DIY allergy test. This is primarily for food allergies that you can't quite determine.

During an allergic reaction, your pulse increases. A pulse oximeter is a great tool to help you check your pulse easily, but you can also check your pulse using your wrist or carotid artery.

How to do a DIY allergy test:
1. Check and record your pulse rate:
• In the morning, before getting out of bed
• Before eating
• 30 minutes after eating
• 30 minutes after that
• 30 minutes after that
• Before bed

2. Record what you ate next to your pulse rate

Typically, you could have an allergy if there is a difference between the low and high pulse rates above 16 points. The pulse rate also needs to be above 84.

If you react to a meal, use this test over a few days, eliminating foods one at a time to help you isolate which ingredient is causing a problem.

What’s amazing for me personally is that as I was growing up in Zimbabwe I never had any known allergies. Moved to the States when I was 17 and all of a sudden I had allergies galore and lactose intolerance to boot. Moved back to Zimbabwe when I was 35 and all the “allergies” I had were gone.

My child heart rate once went up to almost 180, took him to urgent care and his pediatrician but they had no idea why, even though they had on record that he had multi food allergies. I used the oxygen pulse rate meter ever since. Took me awhile to figure out all of his many weird and delayed symptoms and all the food allergies that he had all by myself just by observed him and kept food record. I couldn’t trust the doctors anymore. I also tested by putting a small allergen on the skin and bandage it and leave it on. Thank you for your confirmation Dr. Berg.

I think your heart goes up regardless because you’re digesting. If you have a smartwatch you can learn a lot about your heart’s behavior by watching it through activities. For example, if you have to pee while you’re sleeping, your heart rate will increase to wake you up, then decrease as you release the urine. Once you realize what’s normal for you, you can watch your heart rate to determine if you’re low or running low on an electrolyte. I found that I was taking too much electrolytes at one time and not spreading them out over the course of the day. I fixed that. You can also notice your heart rate drop almost immediately following taking magnesium supplementation. If you have or had mold in your home, you can tell if mycotoxins are present as your heart rate will be elevated while you’re in the home. Smartwatches are worth the investment and the heart monitor alone has alerted me of medical issues along with the ECG…..once main stream smart watches release blood pressure technology it will be a game changer.

I observed exactly the same thing and for me I feel this pulse rising like an bodily felt anxiety and or sadness. Keeping away from the specific foods I feel much calmer and lighter. So I think this test is one to consider for people with anxiety or depression.

My husband has palpitations that have not completely gone away with beta blockers. He also takes magnesium and potassium daily. He wants to come off of the beta blockers because they make him feel blah so this may be the answer to our prayers! He noticed the other day that he had not had palpitations and then after eating a scoop of peanut butter, he had a few. That's what led me to look into food allergies and then this video came at the perfect time!! Thank you Dr. Berg!

I started watching your videos several months ago and bought your books. I started keto diet with intermittent fasting about a month ago. Tried two meals a day but, not hungry for second meals, dropped down to one meal a day about noon. As I am 73 yrs old, could not get 7 cups of salad down a day so eating 4-5 cups of salad everyday and making your smoothie recipe cut in half with frozen kale, blueberries and plain refer. In one month I've lost 12 lbs, dropped myself out of prediabetes from 6.2 to 5.5 A1c, electrolytes good (using your electrolyte powder) brought blood pressure down to 124/68. Starting easy exercise as I'm out of shape and have some physical disability. Still have 70 lbs to lose but, I'm on the way. Notice my energy, physical flexiblity and mood greatly improved. Thank you a million times over your videos, podcasts and books. It's never too late to make better health choices and improve your life and thanks to your input, I'm doing just that!

This process is further enhanced by fasting beforehand, and then ONLY eating ONE specific food at a time, and testing your pulse after each one. Kinda similar to the method you described in taking one food away each time, but rather instead ADDING ONE particular food at a time until you find one that does cause a significant rise in your pulse.

I have kids with food allergies. I've never heard of this easy method. I definitely will try it with them. Thanks Dr. Berg! 😊

Dr. Berg, my mom was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica. Her pain was relatively mild, but getting worse. The standard treatment for it is taking high doses of Prednisone for about 2 years. This has the almost inevitable side effects of diabetes, osteoporosis, and many other serious diseases. Luckily we saw your video that stated that one can use Vitamin D to reduce inflammation, and that Vitamin D is a steroid that is somewhat of an alternative to Prednisone. My mom has been taking 30, 000 IU of Vitamin D (with 300 mcg of Vitamin K) for about 2 months. Her pain has mostly gone away, and her ESR levels had come down (albeit they are still high). Her blood Vitamin D levels have been increasing and are now 390 nmol/L (my understanding is that officially the toxic level is above 500 nmol/L). However, as a result of her taking Vitamin K, her calcium levels are still normal.

She tried reducing the daily amount of Vitamin D she was taking, and her symptoms had returned. She increased the daily amount, and the symptoms went away again.

It looks like therapeutic levels of Vitamin D cause the blood levels to approach the supposedly toxic levels, however with Vitamin K (and Vitamin A?), the Calcium levels remain normal.

I hope you can make another video where you discuss what one has to do when one takes those high doses of Vitamin D for extended periods of time. Is it the case that as long as the Calcium levels remain normal, one doesn't need to worry about the blood level of Vitamin D?

I had reactions to so many foods but all tests negative for years. Had all the symptoms too. It’s more after eating it when it digests. My thyroid grew nodules and my body went crazy with allergies. Had removed and most are gone but not all! Good test to see what foods bother me!

This is very true for my case.Years l've been saying that my heart rate goes up after eating BUT.. can be certain food, salt intake, anxiety, feeling bad in general, some other disease, poor sleep, low water intake, sensitivity to hot meals in geneal, spicy foods, moldy foods, heavy meals - fats, sugar, too many mixed food/combined together that overloads an already poor digestion, thyroid functions, etc. Many reasons.
Went to give blood and they performed a test on hands with various allergens, didn't show a thing. Went to see a bioenergetic, showed a full list of foods, also those that create acidity in stomach - gerd :
like boiled tomatoes, honey etc..
Food sensitivities, not full blown allergies. But i remember that sweet lady telling me to be cautious if some food do spike my heart rate to go fast, can mean is a sign of a more profound allergy.
Oh, sometimes is difficult to know what exactly is - which food, as (reactions can vary when it comes to time.. my body sometimes reacts 10-15mins after some foods, other after 8-10hours, and so on, can be very tricky, unless u eat one or two things for three days and see what happens if happens. Also with sensitivity is important how much of inflammatory food u eat - small amounts could pass through without reactions, while with allergic reactions u shouldn't eat those foods at all)

P.s.
Also many times i don't even need to check my pulse, usually i feel it regardless, as strong and fast.

I had a holter monitor and dr asked what I was doing to cause change and I said eating! He said nothing but I figured this out studying MCAS that reacted after covid! But I get allergy test reactions from regular foods I eat more of! I changed my diet to natural and the same thing! What I eat more often I react to.. very odd and hard for me to control! I know sugar is no no and too much meat! Thank you for verifying this👍

So simple and original. I have multiple allergies. This will certainly help to identify them. Thank you sincerely. 😊

I just got diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis due to a food allergy, so thank you for posting a video on how I can figure out what food is causing my esophagus to get inflamed and make swallowing food difficult at times. The weird thing is my husband has the exact same thing, and we are only in our late thirties. I thought maybe it's something in our environment, but I guess it's from a food allergy. Kinda wierd and crazy though that we both would have this problem. Neither of us have any known allergies.

Heart rate went up for YEARS after eating chocolate candy bars. It got worse as I got older. Sore throat body pains after eating chocolate cake. Went to my integrated medicine practitioner and she said it sounded like I am allergic to chocolate. The test came back showing I am allergic to chocolate. I ate chocolate for years. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Clinical Ecology physicians (MDs) in their Clinical Ecology hospital units incorporated the Cocoa pulse test in their assessments of food sensitivities and allergies. Of notable past physicians who had such units are Drs. Carroll and Blacock in Chadbourn, NC (now closed), vascular surgeon Dr. William Rea at the Dallas Environmental Health Center (still in operation), and Dr. Theron Randolph at the Comprehensive Environmental Control Unit (CECU) in Evanston, Illinois. (He is known as the "father of environmental medicine.)

Having been subjected to a chlordane poisoning at age 30, I spent three weeks in the Chadbourn ecology unit; after the four day water/electrolyte fast, I had three single food meals each day, requiring three Cocoa tests every day! Other tests of course, but the Cocoa test was the least invasive of the tests. Other tests included serum IgE levels (PRIST test) and other blood work, and subcutaneous "provocative neutralization" tests, a far more accurate test than conventional subcutaneous allergy tests.

Their food testing regimen helped me find the foods that were still compatible with my weakened immune system; a Rinkel Rotation Diet (not to be confused with the fad weight loss rotation diet!) allowed me to rebuild my immune system and my health.

Many people with similar chlordane exposures develop cancer around 20 years after the exposure; I just celebrated my 73rd birthday! (Healthy keto, IF, OMAD, lots of supplements.)

A thing I found out recently is that I seem to be allergic to cobalt. I thought for a long time I had an inconsistent allergic reaction to shellfish, but I don't -- cobalt is contained in certain foods like shellfish and so it was hard to really figure out the pattern.
