While they aren't removing them from a narrative standpoint they are removing them from a mechanical standpoint, in other words as far as Stat bonuses, bonus skills or other features, the thing that are an obvious factor it choosing a race when making a character.

If they have such a problem with the half race condition perhaps they need to not have race as a character defining aspect kind of like how Cypher System doesn't use it as a defining characteristic by default but makes it available to the people who want it. Or handle it like the 5e compatible game that I supported on Kickstarter awhile back called Those Who Wander. Which actually gives you a fairly developed option for making biracial or even multiracial characters with actual mechanical differences.

I think you missed the reason there's so much outrage. Jeremy Crawford said, "The half construction is inherently racist."
Those are some dangerous and downright offensive words to utter

Didn't they make it so that the players will have to choose the racial abilities of one race or the other, and not mix from both? Isn't that a functional equivalent of eliminating half races?

We are losing half elf and half orc because these hyper woke hyper sensitive commies have decided the "half" word is racist, a crude Jury rig make your own mixed character does not change that and it also means half elves and half orcs will probably not appear as npcs in future d&d books, or as characters in future d&d novels or as an option to play in future video games after baldurs gate 3's release, its a disgrace and a disaster
