Gamer Nexus made a video yelling at us for 30 minutes. I don't want to get scolded again.

It depends on the case, the card and the fan configuration.
In my case, it's definitely the standard orientation as I have an InWIn 101

I’d say AIB partners design their coolers to work best in the horizontal mobo slot orientation since that’s how the majority of user’s will end up installing it.

That being said, if you’re building SFF, all those “market standards” go out the window real quick 😅

I’ve got the default orientation and an EVGA 3090… my biggest tip for lowering temps while keeping things quiet (besides an undervolt) is using a small strip of foam core under your GPU to prevent the hot exhaust air from being recirculated. Also helps with sag!

The tradition horizontal position, in this build, it has 3 120 mm fans blowing fresh outside air into the gpu.

The best orientation, is the one closest to a fresh air source.

I would say that original position. Vertical would work if mesh sidepanel maybe

Horizontal GPU orientation as long as the GPU cooler fins orientation are kept in mind and how the GPU was designed to work

upright IO is bad for most modern gpus, some heatpipes just don't work right in that orientation. And yet some case manufacturers still design cases with that orientation, really weird. Other orientations are very similar, vertical maybe has a slight edge.

Vertical in a console-style ITX case. Orientation makes a difference only in flow through designs. Other than that is airflow around the components that makes the difference.

Depends on your case and other components. If it's just floating off by itself the orientation won't matter much. If it's got fans blowing right on it, it will run cooler. If it's stuck between a bunch of other stuff it will run hotter. Simple as, the actual orientation should matter very little.

Traditional horizontal with at least 3" of clearance and unrestricted bottom intake fans 👌 Especially with blowthrough cards and a top exhaust. Heat rises so it's the logical way to flow 🌬

I go with the boomer option: horizontal w/ fans underneath. Plus backplates look so much cooler than the GPU fans.

Depends on the case, but for the market standard -- Option #4, traditional horizontal.

Depends.... Depends on the rest of your fans directions, cases, using an aio vs air cooler, budget, and personal preference. Usually the gpu temps arent the issue, it the cpu.

This sounds like that PUSH vs PULL debate.

Rockin' vertical in an ITX cube case, because the mobo is parallel to the ground.

Horizontal should be best, provided that there are fans at the bottom, feeding fresh air to the GPU. Case side panels should be designed to let the hot air from GPUs exhaust straight out of the case, e.g., via a horizontally oriented mesh that aligns with the side-exhaust of the GPU. The stupid trend of using glass side panels makes that more difficult but there should be steel panel options for people who are after function, rather than looks.

What you call upright and I call vertical - with the video ports at the top - is by far and away the best for GPUs that are passive or have a blower cooler, likemy Titan X. The current generation of coolers are designed for GPUs in the horizontal and what I call upright positions, so that's what I use for my 4090 and A770 respectively.

I've been really impressed with the Hyte Revolt 3 case and it's vertical orientation of the Powercolor Red Dragon RX6800XT. I also love the cables coming out the bottom (they go straight through a cable cutout in the desk). The GPU runs really cool in the case And there's no stress on the card.
