As a child I observed my elderly neighbour check her garden for slugs in the early morning. She would put her empty grapefruit halves upside down in her beds and flip them in the morning and they would be full of slugs.

In their book, The Good Life, Scott and Helen Nearing speak of having a slug problem in their garden. They solved it by going out early in the morning to pick them up as they move from the garden to the leaf mulch nearby where they spent the day. Someone else ( I forget who) said if you have problems with slugs, you don't have a slug infestation, you have a duck shortage.

How about having double the amount of planks for people with chickens? Lift up the sluggy planks, replace with un-sluggy planks. Bring sluggy ones to chickens to deal with. Do this every day. Just an idea

I’ve done this in the past, just by accident flipping over the board and finding slugs. I don’t always use a board but when I do I always flip it over once or twice a day and remove all the slugs. Hello from Nova Scotia, Canada 🍁😊

Brilliant idea.

I visited a permaculture / off-grid cottage last weekend (Lacken Cottage in Ireland), and they have a small pond built inside each of their polytunnels. They also have a large pond outside, and a few small dotted around the land. They said that all the ponds have frogs, and since then they haven't had much slug problems.

They also think the little ponds in the poly tunnels help with temperature and moisture.

If you put lots of water dishes and bird baths around the Veggy patch it encourages lots of birds who then stay for tasty slug and aphid snacks .

I put recessed cups half-filled with beer in the garden soil. The slugs and snails are attracted to the smell, drink until they are intoxicated, then fall into the beer and drown. Seriously.

Left left over sourdough starter outside in the rain...( Me and the kids had to interrupt the outdoors pizzabaking session because of sudden rain..) !!! A few days later I find the jar with sourdough starter diluted with some rain...and be FULL of drowned slugs...discusting but works amazingly...guess Its the yeast smell...just like beer traps which work great as well...A bit sorry for some of the leopard-slugs that drowned as well...since they nice from a cold Stockholm Sweden

The board when placed over a newly seeded row also helps retain some of the days heat so seeds sprout quickly.

Hallo there
My first comment on your channel.. Which I looove!! I actually just use my recently picked cabbage leaves and put them all over the place as needed. Slugs love it. The next morning I feed the leaves with slugs to my chickens.
Works a charm!

Your garden is impressive! I am so happy to find your channel! Your videos are visually appealing and informative. I’m gardening for my 3rd year and I am so thankful to learn from knowledgeable YouTube gardeners like you. Thank you for sharing your passion, tips and tricks. I have started making garden update videos on my channel. I just need to perfect filming it’s very challenging in the bright sun. Plus I get dirt all over the place!! I hope we can learn more from each other and that we both have fantastic harvests!

As soon as I finished watching this at 9:00 am local time, I rushed out to do this in my last two beds yet to be planted! I’m sure it will do wonders as I noticed this when sowing my carrots earlier this year. However, I didn’t put two and two together. Thanks Huw!

I roll up a newspaper put elastic bands around it and soak in bucket of water . Open remove slugs and put paper in compost after a few uses. This can be placed in between plants at any stage.

When harvesting rhubarb, also use the leaves to trap slugs as you do with planks.

Two things I've found that they love more than eating fresh plants is a fresh bunch of wilting weeds thrown on the ground in a heap near your plants. (burdock leaves are a BIG hit) this is irresistible to the slimy buggers, like your plank just lift the pile and de-slu, g, return pile or grab a new bunch of weeds to use. Each pile works for a few days until it gets too old I guess and they move on.
And, a fresh dug hole in the ground works great too (Found this when I dug a hole to transplant and got busy, next day found the hole full of them and more coming from every direction headed for the hole. They will come from across the yard to get down in that hole. Put on a glove, and start plucking them into a bucket of vinegar. Its gross, but effective. Just don't forget to check the weed pile daily bc they breed under there like crazy.

I love this! I've never thought of any of these things, I'm gonna try it all. I bet kids would get a kick of going on 'slug patrol' also. Thanks!

in my Polly tunnel, I've covered my floor in sawdust you can get this from the sawmill, carpenters, or as I do collect it from my thicknesser planer which seems to do the job they kept having my lettuce as they came up this is my first year on my own. Also, I've been having trouble with the sun burning the leaves on things, especially my tobacco for the old man so my solution was to put painter's dust sheets in between the hoops and it works a treat they are really catching up in 4 days. thanks for the tip and thankyou others for listening to my rant.
