As i see in this section that some people are complaining about lost "true" pronounciation and "french" accent in breton without knowing anything, i think i have to give my point of view.

I'm french, half-breton from the far-end of britanny. My grand-parents learned breton at home before french at school (breton speaking wash punished in school, france intented to kill all local languages). We heard them spoke, so i can tell what it sounds like.

Sorry but breton has this typic french accent with nasals voyels... cause breton is not welsh or cornic, it has its own evolution, its own influences, like all languages do. 200 years old english didn't sound like modern english. So what is the "true" accent ? An accent is something relative.

Plus, Breton has diferent dialects and prounciations : Leon/Tregor/cornouailles and vannetais (the last one very different). So no true pronouciation.

And at least, nobody knows where does the french accent come from and why it sounds so different from other latin languages. It could be germanic or gaulish celtics influences.

But yes, breton of this video doesn't sound like the breton i know, my breton is closest from the videos of breton on "wikitongues"

The French accent is so heavy on the Breton language that it basically just sounds like French instead of a Celtic language. Not even remotely similar in pronuncation as the language it descended from, Cornish. Only a few of the speakers in the video actually pronounce the voiceless and voiced velar fricatives in Breton, as well as the voiced alveolar trill (trilled R).

Basically the same sort of deal with Irish whose pronunciation has been heavily Anglicised, especially compared to its sister language, Scottish Gaelic.

For those who might comment "nowadays breton is spoken with a french accent". Let's be clear, nasal voyels always existed in breton language, in french stress accent is on the last syllable, in breton it's before. Someone french can't even understand the concept of stress accent.
There always have been different dialects of breton and different accents. Some people rolls R, some pronounced the french and even the british way !
And finally, no young people won't speak the same way as a 100yo old man used to speak breton. He lost his teeth, and he speaks the breton of his time, as his own ancestors did.

Breton is a language which evolved by its own, taking inspiration from here and there like every language on earth. We're not dependent on or subordinate to french or welsh or idk.

So, Britain is named after people whose language is nowadays spoken in France, meanwhile France is named after a Germanic tribe. Oh, Europe, you adorable mess.

It's a pretty language. It doesn't really sound like Irish at all. Maybe slightly similar to Welsh. It's crazy how different Celtic languages can be from each other.

I feel like Celtic languages are the bridge between Germanic and Latin languages. Some words are closer to Germanic words, others are closer to Latin, and some are in between.

All the numbers are similar or identical to Welsh (5, 6, 7, 9), and colours and food - sounds welsh French and German combined - I met a Breton speaker in Thailand and we could make each other understand.

In Romania "Breton" means "Bangs" (Haircut) !

In this kind of videos, it's funny how ignorant and patronizing people who know neither French nor Breton have decided that the Breton speakers "sound French", and even _pity them_ for that, probably because there are nasal sounds and the same R sound in both languages. It's about as relevant as if we French said that Welsh "sounds English" because both have that "th" sound that we don't have.

As a French speaking and teaching Breton, and having heard native speakers in my family since the 60's (they learnt French at school), I can assure you that all the speakers in this video have authentic Breton accents, from various parts of Brittany, totally different from how a French would sound reading the same text. The tonal accent, the length of syllables, the melody of the sentence, even the pronunciation of some consonants and vowels are different. It would take ages for a French speaker to even come close to the accents in this video.

We trust English speakers to identify authentic English accents. Please do the same for Breton speakers.

This language can be considered a direct descendant of King Arthur's and his kin's mother tongue. I know the existence of a single historical prototype of Arthur is uncertain and considered questionable. But the historical events between the Celts and the Anglo-Saxons in which King Arthur is thought of as the Celtic leader did take place. This much is certain. And these Celtic people probably spoke some ancestor of Breton, since the video says that some of them came to Bretagne due to the very 'Arthurian' events.

Breton doesn't sound like French and Cornish and Manx don't sound like English, they sound it that way because those languages were banned by the majorities who spoke English or French and now people are speaking them with heavy English accent or French accent. While Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh are all more preserved that's why the speakers who speak those languages still remain speak the languages in its own way rather than speaking with heavy English accent. But there are actually some people from Brittany can speak Breton in its authentic voice and some Breton folk song singers can sing Breton and speak perfect Breton in Brittany
