14 August 2017, Patalpani (Madhya Pradesh), India

After years of dreaming and waiting, I finally managed to travel to Indore and shoot the metre gauge YDM4 class locomotives for the first time. And I got rewarded with a fire-breathing little monster of a locomotive!

Part of the soon-to-be closed Mhow-Sanawad Metre Gauge section, this region offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills, the Patalpani Waterfall and this beautiful little train traversing high up on the hills. This particular train is the Sanawad-Mhow Passenger, led by a YDM4 at the front and banked by another YDM4. As the banker approaches me, the pilots let the 1400hp powerpack loose and it immediately responds by belching out copious amounts of fire and smoke as it pushes the train up the final stretch of the ghat section.

Enjoy the show! :)

The sound of YDM s is so sweet we can't find it in other engines not even in WDMs. The size of loco and liveries are very proportional to human size and beautiful to watch. WDMs are monsters and narrow gauge engines look like toys. ALCO YDM s are unique. We Miss them badly. Feeling SAD

En nuestra niñez ver un tren de carga o de pasajero era novedoso y si estábamos a 10 metros de distancia era una emoción y Alegría única.

Great setting as the train cuts through that narrow canyon. Big thumbs up !! James.

The pusher loco probably has a bad oil seal on the exhaust side of the turbo. The throttle is increased, more oil from the engine crankcase gets pumped out the seal behind the hot side turbo impeller - black smoke and flames will happen from the oil being poured into the turbo. This was a common problem on ALCo's in North America and still is a problem today on the newer General Electric engines. When you see flames come out of an exhaust outlet on a loco prime mover; high probability the oil seal leaking on the exhaust side of the turbo.

nice video,
this locomotive has been exported to Vietnam and named as D14E, mean it provided 1400hp.
This loco had been used for passenger and freight but now only for freight because it exhausts too much smoke and passengers complain too much about that.

on the C%NW RR we didnt have alot of turbo charger problems, usually when the turbo charger fails, not enough air running rich, and sometimes unburnt fuel fire

Mr. Dheeraj Rao sir,
Thanks for this lovely video. Nostalgic! Is the same still running? I had travelled with similar situation between Lamding- Arundhatinagar section long past in 1972 with my parents and siblings. Really enjoyable.

It's between Kalakund and Patalpani near MHOW in MP I have travelled on this route in Locomotives, Inspection Vans, Caboose, with my Uncle who was in railways, It was a great experience..now I think they have diverged it with Broad Gauge. It's very sad that it is history

Guys, this was no accident. he clearly modded up his diesel and was just rolling coal for the crowd. please don't come to conclusions of poor maintenance and bad fuel unless you have your facts straight!
