Honda HRA214 With a Sticky Blade Clutch

This mower was put away last fall with little to no maintenance. I thought the smoking issue would be number 1, but it turns out the clutch that activates the blade needed work.

That WAS entertaining, thanks for that! It was educational to see the clutch mechanism, and satisfying to see it get back to working properly.

I have the exact lawnmower mine is my father's from 1986..or maybe 85. It is allll original and finally needs a substantial repair. The clutch outer bearing is shot makes lots of noise when blade is disengaged. This video helped me in the way Well I fixed lawnmowers professionally for half my life but NEVER had to service a clutch! Thanks for this video.

I have the same problem. I started working to fix my lawnmower, but it took me a long time; unfortunately, the grass keeps growing, and HOA started harassing me. What did I do? I bought an electric mower last week and cut my grass to stop the harassment, and today I found your video. Now thanks to you, I exactly know what to do to save my old friend. My only problem, I am afraid, fixing that old lawnmower will be the part where you use the table mount club.

Great video Bruce. I've had a Yamaha lawn mower (they are rare - but are very similar to Honda's) which smoked at at start-up and when running. I took out the head gasket and sprayed it with Permatex Copper Gasket Sealant - reassembled and added a coupled of Newtons to the torque - and it stopped smoking. Maybe a warped head - but it sealed the cylinder from the oil gallery.

I think I remember you working on a blade clutch once before. Never had a mower that had one. Great explanation of how it all works, it will be helpful if I ever come across one.

The clutch was slipping on my 25 year old Honda Masters so I took it apart and noticed the clutch pad was glazed. I Sanded it a bit and that fixed it. I think the outer ring is the brake and the inner disk is the clutch. I compressed that spring by hand enough to get the bolt started but it was a struggle. I loved your tiny clamps idea. I don’t think there is any way to get that center bolt out without an impact wrench as the engine turns with it.

Just acquired a HR215 from curbside pick-up. New carb., and new throttle cable [$43] from Amazon and she runs like a dream. Gonna sell my Craftsman to keep this one to continue my Honda collection. Got a Honda powered Simpson pressure washer, and 1994 300 Fourtrax 4x4 and looking for a big Honda Gen. (7000 to 8000 watts) to round me out. Then, I'm gonna find a vintage Honda riding mower for restoration. Gotta love having a small engine shop😀

A lot of people don’t realize how good these era Honda mowers are. I have have three all with blade clutch, self propelled and one with electric start. If you ever bag you want a blade clutch period

I watched your video and in place of the small clamps, I used 2 nuts and cut them to a C shape. The clutch disc has 2 flats on either side of the disc where they are made for this type of application. They are most likely similar to the special tool made by Honda. They won't slip like the clamps. These items will not slip as the small C clamps did.

Thanks I have a HRC215 with the same clutch that I have to reassemble. In my case the ball bearing race was rusted and wouldn't let the blade clutch actuate.

Hmm, never seen one of those clutches like that before. Great fix. After it was running good was it running a bit fast? Hopefully it mow's fantastically and makes someone very happy. Great job. Keep on singing and you will live longer. Stay safe- both of you.

How's she goin'? That clutch threw me for a loop. I thought at first the motor was toast the way the engine stopped at the first of the video. Nice repair and good to know it wasn't a serious motor issue!! Take care!!

nice fix. Drum brake pliers would be perfect for the installation of those springs. Cheers EH!
