Is it FINALLY Time to Drop 1.8 PvP?

EDIT: Apparently you can change attack cooldowns on items through the /attribute command. People are also pointing out that servers like PvP Legacy have made legacy style rods through plugins. Some people were also pointing out that my example of showing how many players were playing on 1.8 vs the latest version on Hypixel was flawed because Hypixel is more optimized for 1.8, so more people are going to want to play on that version. I think that example was flawed but my original statement remains correct about 1.8 PvP based gamemodes being more popular. And finally, I think sword blocking being added as a sword enchant would be better than readding it altogether, so if servers don’t want to use that mechanic they can simply not include that enchant on their swords.

Hey everyone! In this video, I'm going to be explaining my thoughts behind 1.8 vs latest version PvP, what I think about both combat system, and how combat can be changed for the better. I'm really looking forward to hearing what you all think about this video, so let me know in the comments! Anyways, enjoy the video!

Edit: I’ve addressed a few mistakes in the top of the description, make sure to read them!!!

Personally, I enjoy both combat systems for PvP. But it’s hard to invest a lot of time into latest version PvP as a content creator when the community for it is so small. If I started making PvP videos on the latest version, I wouldn’t be able to reach nearly as big of a community as I currently do uploading Bedwars on 1.8. Those are my personal thoughts, but what do you all think?

Regarding sword blocking, I understand it would have a huge effect on gamemodes like crystal PvP on the latest version. I think a better alternative would to have sword blocking maybe be an exclusive sword enchantment that you can get and it only works when you have the enchantment. You could do the same thing with rods too, have rod knockback be a rod enchantment that you can get. This way, if PvP gamemodes wanted to avoid utilizing these changes, they can simply not have those enchantments in their kits.

I believe that another underlying reason why 1.8 has been so dominant is because it takes much less memory and computing power to run a 1.8 server, and a large chunk of the player base doesn’t have a crazy good computer that runs the newest version well and other high performance games like valorant or war zone

Intel, if you ever see this, playing on 1.8 is a lot less resource intensive and less cpu is used + RAM is used.

I 100% agree with the sword blocking problem in the latest version. It’d be such a nice add on to the version.

The fact that click speed affects kb is honestly one of those features where it feels like it’s a bug. Minecraft is already a bit strange in that you can’t just hold down left click -if you then add the fact you need to click fast, adding a bit of a requirement to buy a certain mouse then it becomes a lot less accessible and easy to learn.

The crucial thing here is how much of the 1.9+ pvp community is represented here, I realise a lot of pvp done on 1.8 is done in minigames like bedwars or skywars on Hypixel yada yada, those gamemodes are what people enjoy in that, and I play them myself as well sometimes, they're fun, but on the mention of cubecraft and the gamemodes on there, the thing is that's not where the majority of the 1.9+ pvp community lies, most of the more competitive pvp in 1.9+ that I've been involved in or watched content about is actually on survival servers, with various equipment metas, like crystal, diamond pot, netherite pot, or various others (axes and shields are generally not used and in fact frowned upon by many on survival servers), the main melee weapon is a sword and the offhand is used for food/gapples, totems of kb swords), and there are a lot of practice servers as well that offer these. What they include ranges from old-school HCF type stuff with massive team fights to a server where you can either find a 1v1 by asking in chat or take part in an organised team fight. The thing about that when it comes to content creation is however, yes, there is a much smaller playerbase in 1.9+, and hence a smaller viewer count, there is no need to express how much there is of that, biggest 1.9+ mcyt: probably clownpierce at just under 140k subs at the time of writing (correct me if I'm wrong, I don't watch axe and shield stuff xD), and then intel is doing well for himself but not at the top by 1.7/8 mcyt standards and has over 100k more subs, that point is completely valid, but imo that doesn't make 1.7/8 better or take more skill, in fact having been a 1.7/8 main for a while and then starting to play on a server which was on 1.16, I realised pvp was relevant and started to practice 1.16 pvp, and then found it to take way longer for me to get better at than 1.8 did, and even when I was maining that I was thinking to myself that there wasn't very much to it, I absolutely and always have agreed that it wasn't very intuitive.

I had other points to address but I've forgotten them, cope.

That's my annual extremely long yt comment rant over, it's not a thesis so I haven't proof read it but I did add stuff on so apologies for the continuity but srsly idgaf, writing this I've already forgotten what I said xD

It all come down to what game mode you’re playing and what version its built to be played on. I really don’t believe 1.8 will ever be completely “dropped” because there are way too many popular game modes that utilize 1.8 pvp.

One thing I like(d) about 1.8 and it's unintuivity when learning it was the fact that there was a point where I started getting exponentially better, like if you watch a few videos and practice a lot you will find a point where it just clicks, which was really satisfying after trying to learn it for a long time.

Mojang has said in the past that they want full parity with bedrock and Java edition, but bedrock edition *never got the combat update in full.* Bedrock edition servers are also getting widely popular, even within pc players, and so is the bedrock edition combat system, which has differences from 1.8, but based on the same fundamentals. So, Mojang has a BIG problem that they’re going to have to fix someday…

Also on a side note, a lot of 1.9+ servers add back rodpvp functionality, and some just run on 1.12, due to server optimization issues that I’m not going to get into right now. That’s why big minecraft tournaments, or servers that consist of 1 world (2b2t, MCU) still run on 1.12 (MCC is an exception, I have no clue how they do it). This is also why cubecraft natively runs on 1.12, and bigger servers like hypixel would have a very hard time updating to natively support 1.18, or any version past 1.12.

to be honest, if hypixel updated and made 1.8 pvp not very viable i think hypixel would lose so much of their playerbase, and servers like lunar and minemanclub would skyrocket because of it. I hope hypixel never does this, unless mojang makes a good pvp update, but then they should still have an option for 1.8 to be played seperately atleast

I love and agree with 100% of everything that you said! Especially the part about customization for pvp, that would be amazing if something like that gets put into the game. Thank you so much for making this video. I love your content keep it up!

About this graph 4:01, this is the total number of players that go through the lobby.
At this moment, today 05.01.21 about 1am CET, 68.6k players online on hypixel server, 27k play skyblock, 14k bedwars, housing/skywars/duels 2-3k each, and build battle/arcade 1-2k each, rest of them is under 1k each.
So literally about half of the online players don't even participate in pvp at the given moment.
To collect more PvP specific statistics, we only need to consider people participating in pvp modes. Because a large proportion of these 66, 97% are skyblock players using mods, and these are not available on any versions other than 1.8.
Statistics are a little more than just the numbers themselves, you have to understand what they mean and what is their context.

I really like how Intels videos are immensely informative, providing information for both sides of the story. You really hit the notch on this one, keep it up!

i’ve always stuck with the newest updates since i didn’t want to change my version since i’m lazy. i think i’m decent but i wish that some 1.8 aspects were in 1.18, like sword blocking if you don’t have a shield.

As a very experienced 1.8-system player, I often get accused of using an autoclicker, even when I'm butterflying my casual 12-14 cps. The reason for people to think some players have their ac's on huge numbers is most often that they do not take any knockback, which is something that can be observed with people autoclicking. However, there are strategies with movement and changing of movement ( the main example is jump-resetting), which will reduce your knockback to a minimum even when clicking only 8-9 cps. It is very easy to be completely clueless why the oponent is so much better and this leads to mistrust and accusations and people screeming at you.

This explains most of my thoughts exactly. I play both versions and can never really say which I enjoy, as they are both different with their weaknesses and strengths. I think you should just play what you want to play (which evidently for most people is 1.8) and not really care or argue about it; IMO I don't see the point behind arguing "so and so version is much better than the other"

I really like how Intel explains and says all he wants to say so clearly that even I can understand it and Yes 1.8 pvp is still really good he has point for everything he had to say maybe the new combat system is good but the pvp community is still based on 1.8 even though its harder to learn for those who are reading this, I wish you understood Intel’s explaination about the old and new pvp system because most of the things he said was true and I hope Mojang can cooperate.

If servers were able to create different pvp rule sets for different gamemodes, it would be hard to be skilled at and appreciate more than one game. With 1.8, someone who is a 500 star bedwars player will be at least decent at skywars or bridge. Mojang would also have to do something about how poorly newer versions run compared to 1.8.
