They didn’t “just release”. They were shown off at Gamescom in Germany. They won’t be out until January 1st, 2025

I still like the barcode function as it brings the models to life, but if you don’t like that the sets have lots of functionality anyway as they have tilting platforms and hidden secrets you can activate without the use of the interactive stuff.

Minifigures would be nice but I think brick built characters are better since the characters would need bigfig like, special molds which would make sets needlessly expensive

Most characters are already brick built, the only ones that are electronic are Mario, Luigi and Peach. I wouldn’t say that the problem with the line is that you need the electronic characters to play with it, but rather that it focuses too much on them. The Lego Mario game is a novelty that wears off pretty quickly, but sets of distinct locations with substance and characters can be used/played with like regular sets. The problem is that many sets focus too much on the Lego Mario game rather than just being solid sets to play with regularly, leaving some sets a bit thin and others largely uninteresting. On the electronic figures topic though, I do admit that having non-electronic versions of Mario, Luigi and Peach would be nice, as it would make them easier to play with as regular figures (though I’m not saying the design should change much, just that non-electronic versions of the figures we already have would be nice).
