"You have to get a lot stronger" is what got me here many months ago. "Add a +1 every workout" is what kept me coming back. "Attack, attack, attack and repeat for 10 years" is the latest in a long line of simple, but effective quotes that has fundamentally changed my mindset and helped me be consistent in my strength training efforts. Keep em coming. Thx.

What this seems to come down too is each workout, try to achieve more work done than the last workout, be that more reps or more weight. That is what I am trying to do. I'm starting with a full body workout consisting of seven compound movements split over two workouts, 3x8-10, and I alternate these workouts. The one question I have is what happens when you fight to get the last rep or two up but one of your key muscle groups doesn't want to know. I just had that this evening, a set of standing overhead presses, only 22.5 kg, got the first set of 10, second set 8, third set I was ok up to rep 6, had to fight for rep 7, tried rep 8, triceps were completely gone, couldn't get past the halfway sticking point. Obviously I'll try again next time, but I know there will be a point in the not too distant future where trying to progress will be like trying to start a car with a flat battery, even well before I've got out of novice level weights.

Steve. Read Massive Iron. Awesome book. Being a 50 year old lifter the rep goal system has been a great way to get strong without getting injured. Thanks for all the great content and happy holidays. ✌️

Straight to the point, and 100 percent true! Going on 2 weeks using Steve's rep goal system and definitely feel the difference in my work outs.

Love the your no bullshit, straight forward advice. Question about all the stuff I read about training in your 50's. If I'm just starting out, do I need "longer recovery times", or can I just follow your work outs as is.

I love how there is no bullshit and you get to the point to let people know if you don't put in the effort you will not succeed

+1 for the mental game of consistency. A flag would help me with that ...

I keep having to remind myself that it takes time to progress. I recently started to go to a more powerlifting focused gym where many people regularly squat 500+ lbs and it's hard to not compare myself to those people (with my 315lb squat). Then I get reminded of how far I've come in the past year. Like just today, pulled a 403.5lb deadlift for 3 sets of 2, last time I pulled that much weight was a year ago and I only got 1 rep (weird weight, I know. Back at home from school, only have 300lbs of barbell weights, so I strapped some 40lb dumbbells, some spinlock weights, and two ankle weights to the barbell). When I consider taking ten to get significantly stronger, and I'm only a couple years in, a 500lb squat doesn't seem so daunting.
