So which one would you go with and why? Take into consideration whether or not you own a mark III or are starting fresh?

One single shot from the a7R4 could overflow a Zip disk

I think if you are a wedding/event photographer you should get the A7r3 for file size and workflow stress on your CPU.

I think, A7 RIV deserves more than 1/8th of check mark for focusing, because it has 1) LockOn Tracking 2) EyeAF in video mode.

I got my used (in excellent condition) a7r III for $1550! I'm happy with my choice.

As a former a7r3 owner let me add that if you are planning to use adapted glass with an mc-11, it gets temperamental at times especially when shooting f8 and above in studio. Sometimes the eye af will back/front focus even though it looks accurate with the af box. Also, if you shoot video and stills and switch the mode dial between the two modes too quickly when shooting a hybrid assignment, it messes up the video file. I didn't have these issues with the A9. Pixel Shift is worth its weight if you print. You only need Sony's software to combine the files and you can export a raw file afterwards that Lightroom will read just like a normal Sony raw file.

Great video! I was curious what battery grip is that on your cameras in this video? There are so many out there and hoping to get your recommendation on one that you recommend. Thanks!

Great review Jared, as always! Two weeks ago I sold my R3 vor 2000 Swiss Francs, which I invested into the new R4. The step from the R3 to the R4 was not as substantial as was the one from the R2 to the R3. But Sony listend to us
and improved the ergonomics and funcionality in several points, each of them not world-shaking, but in the sum resulting in a body which is more comfortable and thus a greater pleasure to use. I already owned most of the glass necessary to photograph anything, but could complement my lineup thanks to a bargain offer of the GM 100-400mm.

I just upgraded to the a7rIV and I love it, but I upgraded from the a7rII, so I was primarily doing it for the resolution bump for my macro shots. I really can not stress how much I love the new form factor though... I do a lot of hiking with my kit, and primarily hold it with a hand strap, for quick access, and over a 4-5 hour period my hand would start to cramp and get raw in spots with the a7rII, but don't have that issue anymore with the IV, plus the deeper grip just feels like there is less likelihood of an accidental drop with a hand strap, once you are good a sweaty. Gave the a7rII to my wife and she has zero issues with it, so likely just depends on your hand size or how you carry it, because she prefers using a sling strap, instead of carrying it in hand.

Thanks for the comparison Jared! Do you think the lock-on af is a deal breaker if shooting wildlife (at a consumer level)? Thanks!

Both nice cameras but I hear the focus tracking on the A7R4 is quite a bit superior for wildlife/sports almost near A9 level but just not quite blackout free EVF would you agree?
