Sony a7R V vs Canon R5 vs Sony a7R IV: Best high-resolution camera!

Chelsea & Tony Northrup review the new Sony a7R V, a 61-megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera. It has A LOT in common with its high-resolution predecessor, the Sony a7R IV. They have exactly the same sensor, so all aspects of image quality (such as dynamic range, rolling shutter, high ISO performance) are the same. However, PixelShift is MUCH more useful now, and you can use the Sony a7RV to create 240-megapixel pictures even when leaves, people or animals move through the frame!

Other improvements include 4k/60 video and 8k/24 video (both with a slight crop). Finally, an a7R camera has GREAT video autofocus!

The biggest improvement is the introduction of Sony's AI autofocus system, which detects a wide variety of subjects including human eyes, animal eyes, bird eyes, cars, planes, and trains. It works AMAZING. We test all those autofocus methods pretty intensely.

I really enjoyed this video. The information was useful and well-selected, and I adored the lighthearted vibe. I think it's a great choice to remind viewers that everything is awesome these days camera-wise, and we should just have fun and enjoy these devices regardless of brand. Loved it! 🤓💜

The improved image stabilization is far and away the most important feature for me. Claimed 8-stops versus 5.5. As a mountaineer and stills photographer who hand-holds in low light for landscape, this is a huge improvement over the a7r4. Would love it if you did the comparison in a follow-up review video.

Good video. The R5 being few years old and competing flawlessly with new cameras in it's class. Something to think about.

The perfect camera is finally here, the only problem is no money.

That first shot I could tell the autofocus is a million times better. I spend a lot of time in the a7riv viewfinder, I could literally feel the improvement. Sick

I honestly can't take this video seriously. To claim that the A7R IV's autofocus is unusable in low light is outright bull$h!t. If you are shooting in such low light that it won't focus, then your images will be $hit because there will be little to no available light. In normal, real-world use, it focuses just fine. In fact, it focuses much better than most all other full-frame cameras that were around just a few years before it's launch...and somehow those were pretty good in weddings and low light situations back in their day. If you are having trouble using an A7R IV in weddings, then you need to go take some photography lessons. It's YOU, not the camera.

Great overview! And the ultra-casual tone of this review was even better. Cheers from Northern California

This video changed my life. "Enjoy your life", that's some Dali Lama level stuff right there! Honestly though, I love that you leave the takes where your personality comes through in the final edit.

Even has a hobbyist, I've used 8K to while in Hawaii to film the volcano as I only brought a 200mm lens and with shooting in 8K, I could really crop in and got an amazing video. It does come in really handy. Not often but really handy.

You are the only folks that actually performed a test of the new pixel shift feature. This is the one feature that I want considering now Sony claims it can be used with landscape photography. I'm curious to know how well the movement detection and elimination works with more natural movements like the leaves on a tree. Hoping to see this tested by you soon.

I watched this again as I am trying to decide whether to go with Sony or Canon for the a7r 5 or the R5 and this was super helpful. I appreciate you all for everything that you do and that is why I bought your book in order to help support the channel. Keep up the great work Tony and Chelsea! We Love you'z!

22:00 I hate that you're making a big deal out of this. OK, Canon discontinued the 3rd party lenses, but there wasn't actually that many anyways. Plus don't forget about the EF-RF adaptor, wich works great.

You guys in the canoe with your dog and $20K worth of gear gives me SEVERE ANXIETY. It makes my palms sweat lol.

So basically the A7R5 is a Canon R5 that was released two years ago minus a few features that may or may not really matter?

With Sony's prices catching up since they're no longer the "underdog", the choice isn't so clear and I'm not sure why people are still fanboying over Sony.

Thank you for labeling the camera when you said "this one". Bothered by that for years across so many reviews (and reviewers) pointing to similar looking items on a table.

After just going to my first air show this past weekend, I'm finding a lot of my pictures to be out of focus. I'm was using the R and R7 with the R7 out performing the R by a long shot. However, lots of pics still weren't in focus as much as I would like. This Sony with airplane tracking would be pretty handy! But I'm quite invested in Canon gear and lenses and don't want to change. I hope Canon gets on the ball and has aviation tracking soon!
