Let's not tell anyone to grab their gecko or any animal really by the tail.

Absolutely never pick up a leopard gecko by their tail. It's horrible for them in so many ways, back issues, tail issues, dropping their tail. Just don't do this, if you hate your pets you can just say it and get rid of them.

Never hold them by the tail even if there’s trust in the relationship, I just give mine the belly scoop to pick her up.

I see now why your leopard gecko left his tail twice ..

I just let mine crawl onto my hand, if she doesn’t then I take it as a sign that she doesn’t want to be held.

I wouldn’t recommend holding them by the tail, because sometimes it will fall off.
Edit: thanks for all the likes I guess??

You should only grab your geckos tail if it is an ABSOLUTE CERTAIN EMERGENCY like theyre about to fall or something

Don't pick them up by the tail... They may think they are being attacked and detach the tail.

I'm not exactly a reptile owner but I've seen enough to know you do NOT hold an animal by its tail, let alone a lizard *known* for dropping its tail.

At the end of the day I think it’s safe to simply not touch their tail. For any animal for that matter, if you’re going to pick something up by the tail, just don’t. Leopard geckos will drop their tails if feeling threatened (it’s meant for if an animal grabs onto its tail, it can still escape) holding any animal by the tail does not benifit them in anyway. All it does is make them uncomfortable, in pain, and cause future issues as it could devolop back problems
Unless you literally have no choice to pick it up by it’s tail for some sort of emergency, just don’t.

No matter how experienced or old NEVER pick up a leopard gecko by their tail

Don’t grab them by their tails. It will most likely be painful, and it will stress them out.

Even if it’s an adult that trusts you, there are ALWAYS times a leopard gecko is unusually startled by something random and usually normal for them. Longtime leo owners see their leo freak out at a random occurrence during feeding like even if the bug pokes them in an uncomfortable way and they get freaked out to the point of needing to be left alone for a bit. You never know when your leopard gecko is going to have that random spook, and grabbing the base of the tail is going to really do it for them. They may be reluctant to in most cases, but for a prey animal it will very much simulate an instance in being hunted and sometimes leos will go to instinctive behaviors of such scenario.

This was a long azz way of saying a calm trusting gecko is never ALWAYS calm & prepared

Grabbing your leopard gecko by their tail, even if they trust you, will make you seem like a predator and will stress them out and lower their trust in you. Just scoop your leopard gecko up gently.

Grabbing them by the base the thickest part of their tail is just stupidity
