Spin-On Oil Filter Series: Micron Sizes

What is the correct micron size for filters? The answer is simple the OE has determined based on engine tolerance and components what they need for the length of the service life. In the vast majority of cases that is between 20-30 microns (a human hair 50 microns) to meet or exceed OE requirements. In addition to the filtration size there needs to be flow through the filter so there is a balance of filtration and flow through the filter.

A micron is NOT a millionth of an inch as you said. A micron is a millionth of a METER! A millionth of an inch is 0.0254 microns, or 25.4 nanometers. Such a simple thing for you to have gotten wrong, and I'm surprised that I'm the first to catch it.

80 to 90 percent of engine wear occurs at startup. So, flow is just as important as micron size. Pushing for a lower micron size requires more restrictive medium thus reducing flow..A white blood cell is 25 micron. Your engine, you be the judge.

1-micron = 1-millionth of a meter or 10E-6 x 39.39 inches = 0.000039 inches

Manufacturers filter to 20 micron so they can market that their filters are good for up to 20, 000 miles.
Consumers see 20, 000 miles and think "Hey that must be a good filter"
They last 20, 000 because they're not catching all of the particles.
Who is going 20, 000 miles between oil changes????

Already off to a bad start. A micron is a millionth of a meter. Immediately makes me not believe anything he says after that.
