It's the season for sneezin'!
↓ More info and sources below ↓

Springtime means the arrival of green grass, bright flowers, and buzzing bees. But for many of us, it's also about sneezing, watery red eyes, and a runny nose, thanks to allergies. In this week's video, you'll learn why we get allergies, how our immune system turns against us to attack pollen and pets, and why allergies seem to be on the rise in developed nations.

My favorite analogy for allergies was one I read in a kid's book ages ago... "Allergies are our immune system's equivalent to summoning the National Guard to get a bum to stop sleeping on a park bench."

Also I really wish the "under the tongue" exposure to allergens was around when I needed it most... I got to have bi-weekly injections in both arms for a year instead.

I originally grew up in northeast Oregon and lived there my whole life. Then three years ago I moved to southern Colorado and at the end of that first summer I had allergies so bad I had to take sick days. I had to go to the doctor to get an allergy shot just so the antihistamies would do anything, and even then I couldn't find an active ingredient that would totally relieve my symtoms.

Second year was better, started taking raw local honey well before the season started and I was symptom free after getting the shot and finding the right combo of anti-histamines. Last season I didn't get the shot or eat the honey, just took the pills. Still needed a lot of them but less than before and I wasn't wishing I were dead when I forgot to take them.

Can't wait for all the medical nanotechnology to completely rid ourselves of such nonsensical inconveniences.

If you have allergies when you are in your home, what you have to do is really clean up. I don't mean dust and vacuum. You have to either dust down the walls or wash them.
Same goes for the ceiling. Every square inch. Everything. Because the place is full of pollen. You also have to vacuum your bed. Shake out the sheets or replace them.
It's the only way you're going to get any kind of relief.

I played outside a lot when I was a kid and had zero environmental allergies. My dad grew up on a farm with lots of animals and crops, and also delivered newspapers throughout his childhood and teen years, which meant he was outside most of the time. Then we moved when I was twelve to a neighborhood that's full of cottonwood trees, I got busy with school and college, and I got an office job that keeps me indoors all day. My dad went most of his adult life animal-less until we adopted two (relatively hypoallergenic) dogs two years ago, worked in middle management for 30+ years until retiring last year, and now spends most warm days working outside. Boom! Pollen and dander allergies galore.

%$?# Allergies! You seriously took the words right out of my mouth. I like the way you censored stamen, pistol, etc.

I didn't start really suffering from environmental allergies until I was in my 20s. I grew up in Texas, lived in a few other places, and then moved back home. After I returned my allergies went *crazy*. I had to go to the doctor several times because I suffer too much to go without medication. I've never been able to figure out why they got so bad. I even developed allergies to specific trees and plants that I interacted with just fine as a kid.

This is slowly becoming my favorite channel to watch. Every time I think it is, either Swoozie or CGP Grey uploads a video to reclaim the top spot.

a lot of ppl in the comment section discuss having allergies to trees or plants they were once not allergic to, and i heard there's a problem with also how people plant and breed trees: since they often get rid of female trees and plant only male trees, male trees have adapted to produce a shitload of pollen now (like the amount is growing every decade) to try and spread their pollen to find female trees. and some allergies, especially tree related ones, are ones that actually get worse when exposed to even more allergens rather than growing tolerance, so people who actually are "suddenly allergic" to these allergens were actually always allergic to them, it's just that back then there was so little of that allergen that their body never reacted to it, but now that there's so much at once, their symptoms manifest seemingly out of nowhere.

That was a great video.. funny. Also how weird would it be if trees shook like a dog that way sometimes.
