This happened with me and my small dog Zach. Zach panicked initially then got to work sniffing out my trail. lol If he just looked up he would have seen me. I was calling him too. He was so focussed on the trail he was following he didn't hear me. He followed my exact path and that is when I realized I did not move in straight lines like a normal person lol. He stuck to me like glue after that. I was reassured by his excellent tracking skills, that if we ever got separated for real, he would find me.
