Speed of these vehicles can be easily found out with the help of these odometers.

But how about the speed of these toy vehicles ?

Can these ring magnets help ?

Lets explore.

We will start with the basics first.

Let us use the FizziQ app installed on this phone.

Magnetometer feature of this app indicates the strength of the magnetic field

As I take this ring magnet near the phone, the number goes up.

Same can be seen in the form of a nice graph which plots strength of the magnetic field versus time.

We can take help from the graph to calculate speed.

Let us place these ring magnets at a distance of 15 centimeters.

With a smartphone mounted on a stack of corrugated sheets, lets us move the same by hand slowly over the magnets.

Peaks are seen when the phone approaches the magnet.

From this graph, we can say that the distance between two peaks is 15 cm and time can be found out from the x axis.

We will need ring magnets, ruler, phone with FizziQ app installed and corrugated sheet.

I will use this FizziQ app for the same.

Let us place magnets at equal distance. Approximately 15 cm apart.

We will place smart phone on these corrugated sheets.

Open the FizziQ app and click on the Magnetometer sensor.

Let us move the smartphone slowly over the magnets.

Sensor will show different values when it comes across a ring magnet.

App helps us capture this movement in the form of graph with time on x axis and strength of the magnet on y axis.

Now that we have data with us, let us explore how we can find speed associated with this movement.

Each peak is 15 cm apart in the physical world. We can map this with time on x axis and calculate speed in each segment and average speed from start to finish.

These graphs were captured for different speeds.

Can you find out the one for fastest movement. ?

Now that we know how to calculate speed, smartphone can be mounted on this toy.

Magnets are placed such that the magnetic field is captured nicely.

That was about linear speed . How about angular speed ?

Let us place a magnet at the tip of this rod. As I rotate it around, the magnet moves over the phone once per rotation.

I can rotate it slowly and get the time interval between each rotation.

Can you use the formula from the book and find out its angular speed ?
Where else can we use this arrangement. ?

Let us place it near to this pendulum ? As it swings it records its peak during one oscillation .

Now we can measure period of the pendulum with observed data.

With this method we can measure different movements.

Do try this at home.

Thank You.

Why is the app needed? We can do it without it.
