Both are excellent versions but I love the first release more. The repetitive high hat gives it the edge and it sounds more relaxed too. This version always a little over done in comparison for me. But what do I know 🤣

Ok, your single is from a 1990 pressing of The Immaculate Collection by Madonna. But the original song recorded for her eponymous debut album Madonna (1983). It was released on February 15, 1984, by Sire Records as the album's fifth single.

Arguably one of MADONNA's early and best work! I was super delighted then that almost all the tracks on this first ever MADONNA greatest hits collection were remixed/edit versions, making it even more precious to own. Oddly, TRUE BLUE was omitted in the track list. The 7" remix/edit version would make the compilation complete. And the entire album was mixed in Q-Sound then.

Phil goes back to the year 1983 with Madonna on her Borderline.
Who was responsible for the song?
Reggie Lucas. Lucas' professional career began at the age of 18 when Miles Davis brought the guitarist into his band. This eventually evolved into songwriting and production duties for singers Roberta Flack and Stephanie Mills. However, he is most often credited for his work with Madonna and her subsequent self-titled debut album.
Reggie Lucas in a Rolling Stones interview: "When Warner Brothers called me to work with Madonna, I was everybody's big score. In retrospect it seems ridiculous, but I was an established professional and she was a nobody. I met with her in a tiny little apartment she had rented on the Lower East Side. I thought she was vibrant and sexy and interesting and she had a lot of energy. She was very poor at the time. She was staying in synagogues or just apartments of different artists before that. So I spent hours with her in one such apartment during the shoot. We had a fun experience. There was no committee judging her from on high, because she was brand new and frankly, nobody cared that much about her. She had a sense of the right direction."
On May 19, 2018, an outstanding musician, songwriter and producer has left this world. He passed away at the age of 65.
