Phil crosses the "Borderline" with Madonna.
In the spring of 1982, Madonna was just 23 years old. In the four years since she had moved from Detroit to New York City, she had built her reputation as a nightclub performer. She worked at Dunkin Donuts, slept in at times in an abandoned synagogue in Queens and wore studded bracelets, ripped jeans and bleached, cropped hair. She traveled as a backup dancer for French disco singer Patrick Hernandez and auditioned for Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ." She had also gone to a studio in Times Square with her ex-bandmate (and ex-boyfriend) Steven Bray and had previously recorded a four-song demo. She hoped to use her music to gain the attention of "the kind of people who might like Grace Jones."
She had a lot of material she had written herself and collaborated on with other people to be signed to a record label. "Physical Attraction" and "Borderline" were done specifically during a production process for her. They were specifically not demo songs.
Well, she was a white artist, that was the main thing that set her apart. She brought two things to the table. Madonna was just the first opportunity that she had with Reggie Lucas, musician, songwriter and producer, to play around with other musical interests that he had. Madonna was wilder in terms of her looks and image. Reggie Lucas said she was more sexually free and he predicted then what would happen in the future. She was definitely an innovator when it came to being more raunchy, which was pretty cool. When you mix that with Reggie Lucas' musical background, Madonna's first album was really a mix of own interests and Reggie's. "Physical Attraction" was a starting point with that style. It was doing pretty well at the time and together they began to develop Madonna's career and sound. Madonna and Reggie Lucas had a tremendous amount of freedom. The record company management said: "Make the record, please". They went and made the record. Looking back, Reggie Lucas said that you were happy to grow up in an era when the record companies played a very small role in creative supervision. The creative process was very independent.
Thanks 🙏 Phil for making this high quality presentation and keep on pushing over the Borderline.
R.I.P. Reggie Lucas

It's insane how better madonna is on original vinyl. And of course, audiophil is killing it. But damn, she sounds SO much better.

Specifically the original 1983 mix of this song is, to me, Madonna at her very purest, very best. The later re-mastering took away the simple, direct, from the heart message of this.

I am wondering if the version of BURNING UP on this copy of your album (Side 1, cut 3) is the 4'48" version in the original pressing from 1983. If so, it would be a treat for all of us if you could upload that version which is only available on vinyl. All the reissue edition of this album replace the original version with a shorter, remixed 3'45" version.

Que voz linda tinha a Madonna e amei essa versão. Esta é a original e completa. Canção muito boa, não foi a toa que estourou no mundo todo na época.
