Dyslexia Awareness Part 2: Module 2 - Maths
Celebrities including Sir Richard Branson, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom and Maggie Aderin-Pocock join expert teachers from two world leading dyslexia schools to share their wisdom and expertise in these inspirational Dyslexia Awareness Training films produced by Made By Dyslexia. Millfield School UK and Schenck School USA are both pioneers in the field of dyslexia and the first schools in their respective countries to successfully support dyslexic students and focus on dyslexic strengths. These films have been incorporated into 5 Dyslexia Awareness Training modules designed to help teachers, educators and parents understand dyslexia, both its strengths and challenges, gain essential knowledge in how to recognise and support it, and create a dyslexia inclusive classroom.

About Made By Dyslexia:
We’re a global charity led by successful dyslexics. Our purpose is to help the world properly understand, value and support dyslexia.

We believe in the game-changing power of dyslexic thinking. After all, everything from the light bulb to the iPhone was invented by dyslexic thinkers. In 2020 we launched “Connect The Spots”, a global training and advocacy programme to level the playing-field so every dyslexic child can achieve their potential.

To achieve this we have one single minded mission: to train every teacher worldwide in the next five years to spot, support and empower every dyslexic child.

I've been calling myself mathematically dyslexic for years but didn't know it was really a thing! Thirty years later, I still recall the day I decided I must not be good at math-- my algebra teacher told me I got the answers correct but I didn't follow the right steps to get there. Thank you for sharing this information. Feels great to have a scientific explanation.

A times table is only seen as a memorization tool by people who aren't dyslexic. A times table is literally a number of boxes stacked on each other that represents the area of multiple rectangles. You could count it. You could add it. You could highlight the rectangle you're trying to find the area of. You can discover that the answer is always contained in the square at the bottom right-hand corner of that rectangle. You can find all the cool patterns in it like the repeats that occur around the XY axis formed by the squares. I love the hate that is applied to the times table because math teachers don't understand its many really awesome and fun applications.

I liked math, but hated wordy math problems. Who cares when two trains will passes each other in the middle of the night? Then after you figure out the math they would make you write a concluding sentence with "therefore" or "The solution is'. A few years ago I found out some of my students like NASCAR racing. On Mondays I got the great weekly NASCAR data sheets and on Tuesday we did NASCAR math. Some of you may figure this is thinking outside the box but it was more like thinking inside race car oval.

Maths has been and still is my Achilles hill, as a child I didn't know I was dyslexic and I hated maths even though I enjoy numbers if that makes sense.

I’ve finished republican specialized physics and mathematics school. I made thru it and as you say solved my way. Sometimes I solved that problems where A+ students couldn’t solve. In last years of education I finally understood some math topics, while programming my project in IT. I’d like to make special school for dyslexics. We might cooperate in this. Please respond if you’re interested.

I have often wondered if the base reason for dyslexia is genetic. Perhaps the genes originate from a branch of humanoids who existed long before there was any written form of language. Maybe even prehistoric “people” such as Neanderthals. Because they must have thought in pictures, as I do. So perhaps I am in some part Neanderthal too? Is that some “out of the box thinking”?
