There actually are some 10x (or more) programers, like Linus Torvalds. Linus took just 2 weeks off of Linux development to fix the problem with version control system. His solution is called "git" and now everyone uses it.

It took a good while to shrink down he's code to what was actual needed in both size and complexity.

The trick to become a 10x programmer is to create your own distinct confusing style and force yourself into become the only developer to make the MVP of a new project. You will forever be a 10x programmer compared to everybody else trying to work on that project.

You always have to ask what makes your 10x guy 10x the others. Ten times better or just the piss worst coder leaving unmaintainable crap everywhere so he ends up the dungeon master of the codebase.

Yes. Please kill the 10x programmer myth. A real 10x programmer is one who makes ten co-workers twice as good by:
* writing code the newly joined team-members understands
* writing maintainable code
* shares their knowledge and lifting everyone around them up
* is humble about their talent

Sadly its perpetuated by systems that only values tangible "results" like lines of code, number of commits, bugs fixed, tasks closed etc.

It's hard to measure the spread of knowledge. Or encouragement. Therefore, it's not important when measuring how "good" you are.

The sad truth is most developers have lost their way. Dogmatic practices are more important to them than getting a project off the ground. "That's the way Amazon does it bro!" is their defense when questioned why they are overcomplicating the simplest of projects.

The trick with the 10x programmer is what other programmers you compare it to. It is a lot more feasible to be 10x when using code monkeys as comparison than 10x when using skilled senior+ as comparison.
