The animation is certainly leagues better in the episode of east blue version, but overall, i still prefer the original. I love how they managed to make such an intense scene, despite the limited animation, with things such as expressive art, fitting music and good pacing

I think the actual movement and animation in the 2017 version is “better”, but I think the character art and designs in the 2000 original are way better. Overall the episodes of the original 2000 have far more interesting direction, like cutting to the butterfly during Arlong’s speech to Nami and having the action and music pause for Luffy and Arlong to talk about Nami’s capture by Arlong. The remaster has better fighting animation but character art and overall flow and direction I think is lacking in the 2017 version

I really prefer the original because the animation is more realistic looking and toned down to match the early one piece feel, but in the remake the animation makes the characters feel stronger and I think that really only works for late one piece where everyone is really strong

I really love early One Piece art style, not only because it takes me back to my childhood, but I think I like the simplicity and the general ambience with colors.

I prefer the older version for the most part. I like that the newer one focuses on the bite a bit better, but overall I like the feel the original gives off more.

One thing i always liked about the older animation as you stated was the way the characters looked in some frames more realistic whereas now they have more round shapes and it makes it look a bit more goofy but still love the show regardless

Got to read a lil bit of the manga and I have to say I never realised how dynamic Oda's poses are. Also, didn't expect to have emotions to a finale of an arc I've never read haha. That was a really good chapter, have to read the series proper someday😤

the original one piece anime art style (before it went widescreen) is the best one imo, while the animation now has been leagues better, the art and character designs of the original will always be superior to me.

The character design was better in the original and I really miss the old character style animation

Both versions ARE great to me don't get me wrong but, there's a level of "impact" that I get with the high editing combined with the mostly limited animation that I don't get AS much of in the new one. That tends to go for DB as well for me. I do like that added level of clarity on that chomp tho. If luffy wasn't rubber I'd ask why he wasn't at least bleeding profusely from the hole in his body lol

I always prefer the original mostly due to the water color pallette giving it a very story book/fairy tale vibe which fits East Blue very well.

Oda simple style of drawing one piece characters literally was a blessing for the show animators

I really wish the art direction had stayed like in the early episodes. One Piece was really unique and wholesome like that.

2000’s art style was much better than the updated one

I think I prefer Shida’s version of this scene. However when it comes to jet Gatling scene Luffy vs Lucci I without a doubt prefer the original. The way the speed and impact of those punches where animated is still insane, I don’t think the remake has the same impact.

I quite like Shida's take on the scene, but I prefer the snappy finale of the original. The timing of the later edition dragged on a little and seemed winded in comparison.

This was another really well crafted video dude. I really appreciate how you went into detail about the spacing and timing as those are some of my favourite aspects of great animation in general.

I feel like Oda's (and to an extent the anime's) older artstyle had much more character. I specifically liked the more varied, but not too unrealistic proportions (like Chopper) and the stylistic uses of line art to simulate shadows. It was also a time where Oda still knew how to draw women. Gotta say, his style shift since the Water 7 saga feels much less badass in some respects.

5:43 Thanks for finally identifying this legend for me. I have seen his work for longest and I immediately know its the same guy too everytime one of his scenes play. He still works on the newest one piece episodes as well.

Thanks for the great analysis! I've seen both scenes before and I enjoyed the original more, but I couldn't quite explain to myself why. Now I believe the slower pace and buildup for the kick made the result more satisfying especially with the destruction of the building compared to the more recent adaption. Although, Shida's work on One Piece each time really are the highlights of the show as well. BTW, editing was been absolutely fire and hilarious man.
