Dude being able to convince the workers to let him ride in the front with no safety is wild.

Pro Tip: if you can't use a seatbelt, you DON'T ride. No ifs or buts.

I worked at a Six Flags park. They were hiring 16 year olds to work at major roller coasters. The rides are really easy to operate. Usually consisting of pushing a button. The ride operators were also required to check lap bars and seatbelts. That was the biggest problem. Young kids can not always be the most focused. Luckily, I witnessed no problems in 4 years, but blows my mind 25 years later.

So a guy who unintentionally forgets to do his job is given 45 years, why are people who intentionally get behind the wheel drunk or actually kills someone on purpose ever give less. Not saying the guy didn’t deserve some kind of jail or prison time, I’m just saying he shouldn’t have had more than the kinds of people I just listed. It’s ridiculous.

About the war vet, at least a couple people say from first hand accounts that they actually didn't want him on and wanted him to not ride the ride. However he was making a big fuss and threw in discrimination. Not saying they should've let him on but from these accounts he wasn't exactly innocent either.

I have been a ride operator. I was working a kiddie ride when a child was crying his sister was holding him down to prevent him from jumping off. I had to stop and allow him to get off. His father was yelling the child was just being a crybaby and not letting him off. I told sorry but your child was struggling to get off so he doesn't want to ride he is not gonna ride.

I kept having a reoccurring nightmare in which I was on an amusement park ride and flying out of my seat, held only by my mom's grasp. I woke up screaming from this nightmare so many times that my parents finally sat me down and told me that this had actually happened. I was around 3 or 4, and it was a kiddie roller coaster when I started to panic. Being small, I was able to wriggle under the safety bar and stood on the back of the seat, and tried to climb down the scaffolding. Thankfully, my Mom managed to grab onto one of my arms, and as the coaster went down, the only thing keeping me from completely flying from the ride was my mom's grip on my arm. She tried to reassure me that everything was fine and she kept me safe. However, I still have that nightmare occasionally as an adult and will never, EVER get on any fair ride again.

Imagine surviving getting your legs blown off in war, just to get killed by a roller coaster

James' case really makes me shake my head. Because employees did try and tell him otherwise.. But from my understanding, made a scene, implying he was being discriminated against for being disabled. Like it wasn't about that, it was about your safety and now he's dead.

Hackamer bullied the ride operators (a kid) when they originally refused to let him ride, and threatened to sue. Safety rules stated you needed both legs and body strength to ride. He FAFO (effed around and found out. See also: “play stupid games, win stupid prizes”).

Story #9 about the Ride of Steel... You are incorrect the Ride of Steel doesn't have "safety belts" it has a lap bar... He flew out because he didn't have legs, which meant the lap bar was useless. It was tragic, because the staff members that run those rides are teenagers working a summer job and were not trained to tell an army vet no on a day that veterans were welcomed to the park in gratitude for their service. Tragic for all involved and our entire community.

I was at a Six Flags park many years ago. I forgot what coster we had just rode. We were standing at the observation area waiting on some people watching the coster.
The ride suddenly stopped on the climbing chain hill.
Several ride operators started rushing up the side walkway to the coaster.
They pulled a couple immediately out of the coaster and lead them back down.
The lady was actually holding a baby in her arms.
How in the hell did someone miss that at the loading area.?
Don't know what happened after that except the ride was allowed to proceed.
The park should have called the police and had that couple arrested for endangering a infant.
Plus fire everyone in the loading area for missing some lady holding a baby... like WTF.

I've ridden on several roller coasters where belts were fastened loosely. The momentum was scary as I could feel my body begin to slide slowly out, but I maintained a death grip, constantly pushing myself back. For people too heavy, and weak upper body strength, I could see how accidents happen.

Couple of clarifications. 1) The Columbia sailing ship was not permanently closed. In fact, it is open today from 11 am to 7 pm. 2) The veteran argued with the ride operator who didn't want him to ride without legs but agreed after the arguing.

Theme park : Hey a disabled vet with no legs dream is too ride a roller coaster. What do you think?
CEO: Hell no! Are you crazy
News the following day : The Theme park wouldn't allow a disabled vet fulfill his dream of riding a roller coaster, what a shame!
Theme park gets sued
CEO Sees the no legged vet back for the same roller coaster : Hey let the guy with no legs on so we don't get sued again!
Gets sued again

The fact is that at any park you may visit the rides will most likely be operated by 16 to. 21 year old kids who are working part time and have had very limited training on the rides outside of loading and starting it. Also in most states the inspections of rides are left to the parks with state safety inspectors only getting involved after a accident. 16:27

I got into a roller coaster at Magic Mountain in California years ago and it only had a bar that locked down on my thighs. When the bar locked down, there was a three inch space in between the bar and my thighs. As soon as the roller coaster first went down, I almost flew off my seat since I was holding my hands up. I quickly grabbed the bar and held on for dear life for the rest of the ride. It was the scariest thing in my life.
