A trick I use that is not mentioned in this video, trim your dog's nails after bath time and BEFORE you take them out of the tub. The water softens the nail, which greatly limits splintering but more importantly, letting the nails soak whitens the part of the nail that is just nail, while the part that contains the quick remains dark. YES, this works for black nails too. The black nail does not turn as white as a light nail, but you will still see enough color difference to determine what is just nail and where the quick starts.

When I first got my dog it made me too nervous to clip his nails, so I took him to a professional veterinarian and paid to have it done, the vet clipped the first nail so low that blood squirted on the wall, I quickly learned how to do it myself!

For hairy dogs use a mesh bag that oranges, apples, potatoes come in from the grocery store they work perfectly for pulling hair away from the nail to trim.

Yall didnt even mention the flashlight technique? Shine a light underneath the nail and you can usually see where the flesh stops

I've watched dozens of videos on dog grooming and specifically clipping their nails bc I started grooming our 4 rescue chihuahuas a little over a year ago. 1 long hair, 1 wiry mix, and 1 very high strung old man with no teeth. This was the best nail video, I don't need another now. THANK YOU! I did all their nails today.

When using a Dremel or other powered grinder/cutter, if you grind the nails for very long, the nail will get hot. That adds to their discomfort and pain and is frightening as well. If the nail is extra long, instead of grinding down the length at the tip, it may be quicker to start grinding on the side of the nail close to the intended length of the nail. Leave a little bit extra in case the nail bleeds and when you get the length off, you can go back and then take off the little bit that you left for safety. So since the grinding produces heat, I will grind each nail just for a few seconds and move to the next one. Keep rotating until you reach the intended length. That way, any single nail doesn't get too hot.

These dogs were really good while getting their nails trimmed. What about us who have dogs that act like they got a dose of Flocka when you bring out the clippers? Mine turns into a mental patient.

Pro tip, if you cut the pulpe and the dog starts bleeding, potatoe or Corn starch works just as well as the ”blood stop” you can buy at the vets!

I always give treats after clipping the nails. The amount that they get depends on how many nails I trimmed and how cooperative they were. Also, when first getting them used to the idea, only do one nail per day. As they become more comfortable with the process, go to one paw per day and then graduate to all paws. I find having the dog on their back makes trimming the easiest for me. This can make the dog more nervous. Pay attention to how the dog feels about things, take your time, and do what you can to help them get use to the process. Also, consistency during the process helps the dog know what to expect, which reduces anxiety. With black nails, if you look at the underside of the nail, you can often see the structure of the quick and can estimate where the end is. One last tip: do it in the sunlight when possible as their quicks are easier to see!

If you ever come back to update this, a good close up of how to hold the clipper around the nail and use the little guard would be terrific.

Funny experience for anybody that cares to read:
I used to work as a dog bather at a groomer. I always wore my hair up (obviously) since I was dealing with wet dogs all day. One day, my hair tie broke, and I didn’t have any more with me. I have pretty long, straight hair. It flows straight down, so it’s pretty hard to keep it back. Long story short, I got my hair caught in a nail grinder, and it took my boss about an hour to free my hair without having to cut it. Moral of the story: don’t make my mistake 😂
