3DS Max 2021 // New features!

Most of this models on the video come frome Sketchfab, and are property of each artist. I just did modifications on materials or some added animation to test different elements. Is not at all my work, I just used them for viewport testing.

We have a new version of 3dsmax! and with a lot of new stuff on it. I have been heavily debugging this one during this last 3 months and recorded a bunch of videos, decided to put them all together showcasing some of the new features that are not all of them! At the end you can see the list of all changes during last year in 3dsmax thanks to Changsoo Eun. (indicated if the feature made in on a previous update by "PU").

So here we are, with great updates on viewport, OSL has some of my favourites updates, being able to mix it with QT OSL can become a superpower weapon, HDRI environment and HDRI Lights, and OSL projectors are just awesome to work with, Mikkt weighted normals and PBR materials will make happy a lot of game creators (also added OSL support on FBX exporter/importer). Oh and dont forget the bake to texture, great for any content creator in max.
Arnold and Physical material are now default, making for a new experience, Physical material has been rewriten in QT you will see is faster to move on the menu, and... you can select nodes in Slate with a single click! also one of my favourite small but great improvement.

Python 3 support, explicit normal preservation, new installer, faster 3ds max load, faster savings... there is a lot to like, and you? whats your favorite addition?

Glad they still make 3ds max alive.... This is my main weapon in the industry.... Specially with amazing tyflow.... Just amazing

Max's viewport is looking better and better in each release, the new render to texture tool looks very capable.. keep up the great work.

Bake to texture was very old, i'm glad they remade it completely. Hope it has better performence too.

Hi Eloi. Thanks again for your work about this channel. I like the vibe and your accent. Plus your pace is not too slow and goes straight to the point. It's quite appreciable.


Indeed, you were right, something was happening backstage concerning viewport lighting ! I'm so, so, so glad 3dsmax seems to finally have a proper development team that push it the right way. After 15 years using 3dsmax, I still think some things need to be updated or reworked since version 2012 or so. Some stuffs could be wiped away now following the mental ray kill move, and many extra clicks could be avoided. Compared to Houdini releases, we could have felt a bit leftover. That said, with this proper development team and thanks to the awesome scripting community, we are definitly heading somewhere now :) (Not mentioning TyFlow which is tottaly killing it at a scary pace and Fstorm which may become production proven in a year or two ! )


Also with 2021, the 2020 plugins retrocompatibility is a nice gift. (didn't try it out yet but seems to be the case).


I personally think I definitly have to dig deeper into OSL. Especially since new color correct and procedural 3D noise. Pretty sure this would become my goto workflow soon.


I'm hyped by the upcomming AI UV layout coupled with autoretopo ( which I know exist already as a pretty efficient plugin ), coupled with the new R2T, it feels promising. I'm pretty curious about Bifrost. Animation definitly needed some love and I'm glad some new tools are upcoming. SDK Consolidation is a question for me. Does that mean they would drop some coding language for a unique one ? This wouldn't be smart right ?


Also and lastly, as a frontrunner of this package and linked to probably the most influencial 3dsmax focused company, I'm wondering what are you personally hyped with ? And also what future plugin update you are looking forward to ?

Out of curiosity, are those new preview options usable for people who mainly use V-Ray or other render engines than Arnold?

finally they go to a right direction, viewport shading and PBR, i can use max for next 10years happily.
