I think the main draw of terra forming other planets is to have a second option in case of a cataclysmic event (think planet busting asteroid, rogue comet, Yellowstone eruption, ect) not just a "Oops we fucked up Earth lol let's move out"

I believe his premise is that when people talk about leaving earth to colonize it’s generally in the concept of human survival to keep humans alive. So for most examples of people who envision colonizing other planets it’s generally not viewed as a scientific endeavor but more so as a means to maintain the species.

I think Elon wants to use Mars and the Moon as steppting stones for space expansion and exploring.
