The scariest part about all of this is that it isn't that we're incapable of making it happen, it's just we literally do not have a reason. Conflict is the only fire hot enough to create that level of urgency. The most incredible levels of advancement only happen when parties involved have something to prove. You make the US think you're going to explore uncharted territory before them, they'll work together with the most brilliant engineers around the globe to have a space faring vessel before you know it. JUST so we can be first.

I was 10 years old for Apollo 11. I remember it well. At that time, the plan and estimate was within 20 years we would have people walking on Mars. Now is is 55 years later and we are no closer to doing it. I for one am highly disappointed. I at least want it to see it happen in my lifetime. Hurry up...I can't wait forever.

The only thing that might make Mars a target financially would be as a logistical point to support mining asteroids. Mars 1) has water 2) some infrastructure may be easier to develop there due to its gravity (and access to water), 3) it is much closer to more asteroids than Earth orbit or a lunar base. The question is whether the value of what we could recover from asteroids would make it worth it. I'm sure such things are being considered.
