Anytime You're Struggling With Art, USE THIS

Here's something to refer to anytime you're struggling with your drawing or art. While there is a certain amount of struggle that’s sort of always going to be in there, as you make decisions and grow artistically, there’s times when you just feel sort of stuck or like you’re spinning your wheels.

I wanted to share with you, the list that I go through every time I’m dealing with something similar, and hopefully, modifying it a little to suit your own situation, you’ll be able to use the same, because sometimes, especially as a professional, you can’t afford to spin your wheels. I also have Some iPad Pro Procreate timelapses for your eyeballs while you listen with your earboys!

This is the third time today I've been told by completely unrelated sources to slow down and take care of myself. I should probably take the hint.

So many solid tips that just aren't talked about often. Self-care is IMPORTANT! Another awesome video, Brookes!

Not rested haven’t eaten, I’ve been drinking all day. Been exercising every morning, my posture is fine but it’s super hot right now. I’ll go take a nap and get something to eat later. Thanks for the tips.

Its been two years since I left university. I studied digital art and 3D modelling. Going in it was my dream career but coming out I feel broken. I havent drawn regularly since then and struggle to even put pen to paper and draw a shape I like. My university experience totally extinguished any natural ability in me and sucked the joy out of drawing for me. Im attempting to get back into it again now and this video was a nice introduction for me thank your genuine and honest approach and advice on this. I swear nobody talks about any of this stuff.

It makes sense - in order to make good art, you must live a good life. It sounds so simple, but yet those two things go hand in hand. The art we make is a piece of ourselves. Therefore, if we suffer as humans, our art is going to suffer as a direct result. Take care of yourself before you take care of your art - if you can't take care of yourself, how are you going to take care of your art? Thanks for the reminder, I love your videos! :)

Awesome video, truly. It came at just the right time for me. I have a hard time taking care of myself - mainly because my "struggle" is the distinct feeling of not being good enough (at art) and fearing for my future because of it, since art is my dream. I push myself to create art every day, striving for nothing short of my best, 100% effort and 100% quality work... which leads to severe burn out. I realized I had it but kept pushing myself through it anyway. After a while, this lead me to being unable to do anything at all - and I only hated myself more for it. But this - this was so... healing. I can't explain, but it's really helpful to hear from someone on the outside that I'm allowed to take a break - that I'm allowed to be tired, hungry, or overworked. That I'm allowed to be human. Thank you so much for this video, and to everyone else out there like me, please, please, PLEASE, go take a break. It's okay. You're allowed.

Back when I first started college, 25 years ago (!!!), I quickly learned that it was nearly impossible for me to make any real progress on an art project if I was stressed out over real world problems. Like where was I going to find the money for my next tuition payment? Or why was my car suddenly making weird noises? What I found really helpful was simply writing down everything that worried me in a list. It didn't actually solve the problems, but it was a great stress reliever and I guess it signaled to my brain that the concerns had been documented and weren't going to be forgotten; so my mind was free to start focusing on other, more creative, activities.

I've drawn practically nothing since I burned out on my webcomic back in January. This seems like good advice for getting back into things.

Oh my god, the beginning of this video is so important and well written, just indicating unlike so many artists that so much more goes into someone's struggles with art then "laziness" I always draw better after I've eaten good food, had some coffee and gone out for a walk. It gets the best results.

Great videos.
I really like your lighting. It makes me feel like we're at a sleepover and just talking about art.

I also appreciate the volume at which you talk. Not yelling at people is a skill more YouTubers could probably learn

The basis of this video and "are you wearing socks?" connect with me really hard because these are things I try to get people to be aware about. People like to ignore parts of their body their personal culture doesn't pay attention to and forget that we're living within these things.

It's also really helpfull is you have a scheduled time each day for creating may it be drawing, writting, etc! Your brain gets used to it and expects to be creating at a certain time. And even if nothing happens on some days, it's okay as long as you spent the time on your creative corner wherever it may be or hey, make a line. Sometimes that's all it takes to start. :)

Thanks so much for these tips tho! I've been stretching, running and doing some arm exercises for the last two months now on a daily, smaller scale and I think it really helps with a more positive mood towards creating especially with the looming deadline to finish my thesis film is practically banging on my door. :')

Keep being incredible and can't wait for the next video!

2:49 I've actually had moments where I'd be really, *really* into what I'm drawing, and really loving the flow that I've gotten into...

...only to suddenly realize that seat's getting very uncomfortable, let's just try to finish this (read: "rush out") before it gets any worse...

I was actually struggling to even sketch because I expected too much of myself for a giant art piece. I forgot that art should be fun for me, and that what I’m struggling with is a mental thing.

Nealy everything you said has been bothering me for a year of burn out. Thank you. It gave me clarity.
