Doctor Reacts To WILD BuzzFeed Medical Videos

Over the years the team at Buzzfeed has dipped their toes into the world of creating some medical videos. I have actually appeared in some of them, but today I wanted to take a look at what videos they’ve put out and see how accurate they are. A lot of their interviews with med students and nurses yield some very true stories and experiences of what it’s like to study medicine! Some of their other videos, such as how to fight off a cold… not so much. Today we’re debunking miracle cures like Apple Cider Vinegar, the value of a good nasal spray, how much coffee med students drink, and some nightmares that actual nurses have had to endure.

I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

I fell asleep in the front row of a university class. All I remember is waking up, being asked a question by the professor on what he was teaching, giving the correct answer and being told I could go back to sleep.

Ah yes, the classic cure to fever: trenchfoot.

Being able to to speak your non native language without even a tinge of a foreign accent is mind-blowing to me. I don't know why, but that's one of the most impressive things I have learned about you.

I love the parts with honey for the cough. If you had grown up when I did, in central Kentucky, you would have been given honey, lemon juice and a teaspoon of bourbon. We used to say "It won't cure your cold, but it sure made having one a lot more fun." And mother's would rub a drop of bourbon on a teething baby's gums. It was the 1960s.

Sleeping with wet socks on seems like the kind of medical advice I would expect from Buzzfeed.

I'm in med school, almost finishing, and never did an all nighter as well. I value my sleep more than my grades. Mostly because I don't learn anything while I'm tired.

Used to be a med student. Dropped out 2 years before graduation because I wanted to be a designer. Dad forced me into med school. Now that I'm out, I love listening to medical podcasts, read medical journals and of course watch Internet doctors. Only because it became a hobby and not a responsibility.

"If any of them say they have not, I don't buy it."
*Literally a second later*
-I don't believe in all-nighter.
"She's never pulled an all-nighter?
That's really impressive."

Definitely my favourite part of the video.

I have a CF variant and I'm always sick and coughing/get pneumonia from the literal common cold. When I was a kid my mum caught wind that honey helps with cough, and she'd make me swallow these huge heaping spoonfuls of honey constantly, it was worse than the actual sickness. A few years ago I found out that I'm actually allergic to honey and haven't let my mum live it down since haha

Everyone in college have pulled an all nighter, medical or not.

Fun fact that I didn’t know until it happened to me; coughing too hard for an extended period of time can actually fracture your ribs. Had Covid and bronchitis at the same time, and ended up in the ER because I felt a pop in my ribs. Still healing, but not so painful anymore👍🏻

I diagnosed myself with hyperparathyroidism, then had a parathyroidectomy where they also took biopsies only to find that I also had thyroid cancer. It’s been a cut throat year! 🤦🏻‍♀️

6:40 when Dr. Mike is talking about how med students diagnose themselves with stuff they come across, I can honestly say that psych students do it too, though for some of us it's less diagnosing ourselves and more diagnosing those we know. First month in Abnormal Psych and you think you suddenly understand everyone in your life.

Doctor mike’s veins are going to pop just like his shirt buttons last year (and probably now) lol!

The thing with doctors not knowing everything is totally understandable. I had an unexplained seizure last year, after never having one before, being perfectly healthy, and no family history of seizures. I saw three different doctors and got every diagnosis from a ‘grand mal’ seizure to ‘no seizure at all’. Sometimes weird abnormalities happen, but luckily for me I’ve been fine ever since

My cousin actually did successfully diagnose herself in med school, and solved a family mystery too. When she was learning about Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, she thought she had it. Spoiler alert, she did, and so do many, MANY family members, myself included.

One of my highschool teacher's if u fell asleep he would literally sneak up and spiderman jump onto your desk, idk how he did it so perfect I never saw him fall but it was always hilarious, he ALMOST had to do it to me once but I felt him creeping up lol. He was the best teacher I ever had and actually was one who made an impact, thank you Mr.Clark🙂

I went through college by stressing out at unseen levels and decided never to do that again. Went through university by studying for no more than 6 hours every day. Never failed an exam and scored above average. The key for me was not to stress and I think I gained more from those 6 hours than I would do if I stressed for 10, 12 or 15 hours.
