The Top 10 STRANGEST Events In Olympic Games HISTORY..
Welcome back to Sports Dive. So Tokyo 2020 is upon us, albeit a year late. I plan to spend pretty much the entirety of the 16 days sitting on my ever-expanding posterior as I eat crisps and biscuits and drink whatever is cold and nearby, watching brilliant athletes do extraordinary things. The Olympics is the greatest sporting spectacle on the planet.
But it is also a bloated, weird, cumbersome event, growing larger at every iteration, drunk on its own self-importance and desperate to expand. At Rio in 2016 there were 28 sports represented. This time, there will be 33 and some of the events are, let’s face it, a little eccentric. BMX freestyle… Skateboarding… Surfing… Why not just embrace the whole “dude” culture and have dope smoking as an event? And as for rhythmic gymnastics, that one where they prance about with ribbons, or dressage, where horses walk weirdly to music… are they really sports? How long until the winner of Strictly Come Dancing earns an Olympic medal?
